Although we spend a lot of time thinking about and discussing tat designs, there's something just as important: tattoo placement. Where, exactly, are you going to put that fabulous work of art? Some of the most popular areas for tattoos are:
To Show or Not to Show
When it comes to tattoo placement, one of the most important considerations is whether or not you want the tattoo to be readily seen. While it may seem obvious that you want to show off your tat-- why get a tattoo if no one will see it?-- this is actually something to think about. If you are in a profession that expects or demands a conservative appearance, a tattoo that can be covered by work clothes is important.
If, on the other hand, you are a rocker or other rebel type, you might prefer the bolder, in-your-face elements of chest pieces or sleeves. Feeling exceedingly bold? Go for a neck or facial design.
If you are going for the sex appeal factor, there is something inherently sensual about a tattoo that is only seen by your intimate partner. The breasts, hips, and inner thighs are all excellent locations for this.
Large or Small Design
Likewise, the size of your desired tattoo is a guiding force in the tattoo placement. While a small tattoo can be placed anywhere on the body, a large design needs a much larger, often flatter, canvas. For large, sprawling designs, consider the upper or lower back.
Shape of Your Design
The shape of your tat is also worth considering. Some designs, such as chains or scrolls, naturally work better on the wrist, ankle, or upper arm, while flatter, boxier designs demand the flat surface of the back, stomach, or thigh.
