Wrist Tattoos

The popularity of a tattoo can be determined by the number of people wearing them along with the availability of styles in a flash book. Wrist tattoos have found favor with both men and women for mainly two reasons:

  1. There are a lot of design options and variations for circular wrist tattoos.
  2. They can easily be covered by long sleeves, wrist bands, bracelets and other kinds of jewelry.

Getting a wrist tattoo is much more painful than inking fleshier areas of the body such as the forearms. The pain of tattoos varies in intensity depending on the part of the wrist being worked on. As the tattoo needle is moved around your wrist, you will notice a marked increase in pain the closer it moves toward your hand. It's also good to be aware that your fingers may become numb. It's helpful to flex them to keep blood flow moving, or the numbness could last as long as an hour.

Tattooing on the wrist has a few caveats you should be aware of:

  • A wrist tattoo should never be placed on the inside of your wrist below the crease since the tattoo can be deformed over time due to excessive movement.
  • Tattoo size is limited since the circumference of the wrist is small.
  • Wrist tattoos may need to be touched up sooner than other tattoos.
  • Healing time is increased due to the location of the tattoo.

Getting a tattoo is typically a lifelong endeavor, so be sure to get going on the right foot. As always, you should talk to your tattooist about designs that are right for you and the placement.

Ideas for Circular Wrist Tattoos

Nearly any tattoo idea can be modified to fit the wrist, but be selective because not all of them will look right if made too small. There are many kinds of wrist tattoos, most available as flash, but few have become the standard like these have:

  • Barbed wire: Many people love this style because it is simple, but it can also be modified to be more unique. It wraps around the wrist in its entirety and can include scars or droplets of blood to accent the spikes. If deadly wire is not your thing, you may wish to consider a string of rose bush thorns around your wrist.

  • Flowers: A collection of flowers around the wrist is popular with women, although many males who belong to tribes, such as Samoan, may get them as a cultural tattoo.
  • Tribal: Best known for being a tattoo that goes around the arm, tribal tats can also be made to fit around the wrist. This would prove to be a very painful tattoo considering all of the filling in that would be needed.
  • Celtic Knot: Having this tattoo style inked on the wrist, like the tribal, will be very painful. There are many kinds of Celtic tattoos that can be modified to fit the wrist with minimal loss in style.
  • Names and Phrases: One popular style of tattoos is name tattoos. You might choose to have your own name inked around your wrist or that of someone who is close to you or that you especially admire. For example, you could have the name of "Jesus Christ" circle one wrist if you want a tat that expresses Christianity. This is just one option, but it gives a small idea of what you can do with names.

Here are a few more suggestions you can try out if you like to:

  • Cycles of the moon
  • Religious iconography
  • Runes
  • Playing cards
  • Planets
  • Flowers

For many of the tattoos listed above there is probably a piece of flash in your tattooist’s books that will match. If for some reason you can't find what you like, you can always ask your artist to draw one up by your specs, draw it yourself or allow your artist to tattoo you freehand. Just remember that going too small on certain designs could render the design indecipherable.

You will notice that the designs you find in flash books for wrist tattoos are relatively one length. This is because of the popularity of armband tattoos. The tattoo artist will take the design you want and will enlarge or shrink it to the circumference of your wrist. These same designs can also be resized for a matching ankle tattoos).
