Evil Skull Tattoos

From LoveToKnow Tattoos

Evil skull tattoos haven't lost any of their panache over the centuries. These tats are still staples offered in every tattoo shop you'll ever walk into, and you might even be a little surprised to learn who's wearing them.

The Mystique of the Evil Skull

Evil skull, Death's head, Jolly Roger or whatever you prefer to call it, these tats have been around quite a long time. They've always held a sense of foreboding and doom, and they've set the people who wear them apart from the mainstream crowd. A truly heinous looking skull says, "Look if you dare, but touch at your own risk."

There was a time when skulls were strictly the domain of pirates, and later tough biker types, but they've been commandeered in recent times. Now days, the pirate's famous skull and crossbones is found on everything from sexy swimsuits to toddler clothing, so the design is losing some of its appeal for tattoo enthusiasts. However, there are still plenty of ways to create evil skull tats that aren't a watered-down, contemporary version of the 1970's smiley face.

Who Can Wear Skull Tats?

The short answer to that question is virtually anyone. Yes, bikers still love the design, but they're not alone. Corporate three-piece suit types like skull tats because they express the cutthroat attitude often applied to get ahead in business, even if they do need to hide their body art during work hours. The Gothic crowd embraces the design for its profoundly romantic appeal that blends so well with its darker aspects. Many older teens feel a certain kinship with evil skull tattoos for their rebellious qualities.

In fact, deep down, can't most of us find a bit of common ground with "Mr. Bones"? After all, even the best of us still have that tiny little nugget of darkness at our very core, just waiting for an opportunity to trip us up. An evil skull tat can be a reminder to stay on guard.

Design Ideas for Evil Skull Tattoos

Real skull

There are just so many ways to go with this design.

  • You can go old school with the standard evil skull, complete with hollow eyes, bald head and bony looking teeth. There's nothing wrong with this design, but some of us like a little more pizzazz.
  • What about a skull with a snake twining its way out through one of the eye holes?
  • On a similar note, you could also swap the snake for a nice hairy tarantula, and perhaps a web strung across an empty socket.
  • A skull tat with a withered red rose could be a symbol for dead love.
  • If you must go the skull and crossbones route, consider replacing the bones with something else like lighting bolts or crossed swords. They are slightly less cliché.
  • Why not consider a standard skull, but with glowing yellow pinpoints of light shining out of the blackened sockets?
  • How about a grinning evil skull, complete with furrowed brows? It conveys a sort of gleeful menace.
  • Take a skull with an evil grin, add some wildly flowing hair, and you have a tat the will make people think twice before messing with you.
  • If you prefer the moldy oldy treatment, something perhaps a little more Goth in nature, how about an old skull lying at the base of a tombstone? You could even have forget-me-nots with vines and weeds growing up around the skull and through the sockets to give the tat a feeling of things long forgotten. Choose whatever you like for the inscription on the tomb stone.
  • Of course, you can incorporate an evil skull into a Grim Reaper tattoo. Simply have Grim's hood pulled back to reveal his head.
