What Every Tattoo Artist Must Know

The art of fire tattoos has been around since the beginning of modern tattooing. Even tribal tattoos have a bit of fire in them as the sharp, winding patterns flow fluidly around the body much like a flame licks at the air.

Fire Tattoos: What They Mean

Since the dawn of thinking, fire has held mystical properties that, despite its simplicity, still fascinates as well as frightens us. Many cultures and religions use fire as symbol to mark change or certain religious rites. These symbols are what serve to inspire many of the great fire tattoos seen today.

Fire tattoos are often used to dress up an old piece of ink in order to make it newer and to give it more life. Fire tattoos are much more than just something to spice up and old piece of work. Fire tattoos come with deeper meanings for certain people even something as simple as an eight ball surrounded by flames or a dragon. Other symbols like the Yin and Yang can be engulfed in flames to further the duality of the symbol.

Fire is one of the most feared destructive forces in nature. It can destroy and kill more efficiently than anything that man can create. On the other hand fire can be used to ward off intruders or even to show a political opinion. Fire can be added to dark themed tattoos in order to stylize it as well as make it look more evil and destructive.

The destructive power of fire has to be revered and respected but there is a duality that exists. It can also warm and heat a person and be symbolic of the fire and passion that burns within. Fire can be a beacon on a dark night or a way to ward off enemies and for many, fire tats represent a time of transformation or change, sometimes even a warning.

Cultures and religions of the world have often used fire to symbolize many things. The flames can be representational of the fierce power of God with the smoke as a means to transport prayers to Heaven. Mythology has used fire in regards to many things from rebirth to destruction. With all of this in mind it makes perfect sense why these tattoos are so popular.

Christianity

In Christianity, fire represents the Holy Ghost but it also describes Satan as being surrounded by flames. Archangel Michael’s sword and God’s chariot are also flaming. But Hell is also filled with fire to burn the souls. God also spoke to Moses in the form of a burning bush. Temptation and sin is also very much depicted by fire including sex, passion and the destructive forces of both good and evil.

Mythology

In Greek mythology, Prometheus stole the flame from the Gods to give to the humans in order for them to advance their society. It is for this reason that fire represents knowledge, change and warmth. One of the most recognizable mythical creatures is the Phoenix. This creature bursts into flames and turns to ash and then is reincarnated from them. The Phoenix represents transformation, rebirth and the cycle of life.

Judaism

Judaism uses a lit candle to welcome new holidays and to separate the Sabbat from the remainder of the week, as well as remember the dead. The belief in the Eternal Flame is another important symbol of Judaism. The Eternal Flame was to be kept in the First Temple as well as the Second Temple and the flame was to last forever.
