About Flower Butterfly Tattoos

A lot of women admire tattoos, but they would never consider getting one themselves. Why is that? Is it because they're afraid of going under the needle? Yes, sometimes fear of the possible pain is a big factor, as well as the fear of contracting HIV or hepatitis C from improperly sterilized equipment.

Then there's that old chestnut called "social stigma". As tattoos explode in popularity, they are becoming more accepted in society. However, there was a time when body ink was strictly the domain of less than savory characters. Today, tats are moving far beyond any particular culture or social status. You'll encounter people with body art across nearly all walks of life.

Perhaps the biggest reason that many women admire tattoos yet don't take the plunge and get one themselves is that they haven't found a design they're sure they'll be comfortable with. This is where flower butterfly tats come in.

Unlike many tattoos, flower butterfly combinations don't have much to say. Yes, butterflies are considered symbolic of rebirth, and certain flowers have meanings, but generally speaking, these designs are fairly innocuous. They can be exactly what they appear to be- beautiful works of art. As such, they are usually well accepted by society-at-large, especially in the work place.

There are a number of ways to combine flowers and butterflies into a cohesive tattoo design, so let's check some out.

Flower Butterfly Wings

In your mind's eye, picture a butterfly with large gorgeous wings. Now replace those wings with the petals of a flower. You've just created a flower butterfly.

Certain flowers lend themselves more easily to this type of design due to the shape of their petals. Some really good choices might include:

  • Hyacinths
  • Roses
  • Lilacs
  • Irises
  • Tulips
  • Snapdragons
  • Orchids

You can take this design idea a step further, and completely create a butterfly from an entire flower. For example, imagine parting the petals of a lily into four butterfly wings, and creating the butterfly body and antennae from the pollen stamens. This can be a terrific tattoo that also works like an optical illusion. People will see what they want to see.

Butterflies and Flowers

Butterfly and flower tat

Of course, you can take a more traditional route with a design that simply combines flowers and butterflies as you'd find them together in nature.

This includes:

  • A butterfly fluttering near a flower
  • A butterfly resting on a flower
  • A series of butterflies hovering around a vine of flowering greenery

Any flower that provides nectar is bound to attract butterflies, so you can basically choose just about any type of flower to incorporate into your design. If you're a purist at heart, you might want to consider working one of the following known butterfly attractants into your tattoo artwork.

Flower Butterfly Tat Sleeves

Tattoos sleeves are actually a series of tattoos that cover the entire arm just like a shirt sleeve. If you love your flower and butterfly tat and decide you want a lot more, a sleeve just might be the way to go. The vines, flowers and butterflies motif is especially well suited to this type of tattoo.

However, don't think this level of body art can be achieved in a single session. Most artists will ink the outline first and move on to filling the design in with glorious color later. How quickly the work progresses depends on just how much time and money you have to put into it, as well as how much pain you can endure in a session.
