Angel Looking Toward the Heavens

The Meaning of Guardian Angels

People who get Guardian Angel tattoo designs typically view them as a way to keep their Guardian Angel closer to them. Origins track the Guardian Angel to the Christian faith, whom believe that a Guardian Angel is assigned to each person to protect them from harm.

Since the Guardian Angel is meant to protect and ensure safety, these angels are not usually associated with Archangel’s. The Archangel was the warrior of God and included angels like Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. These angels were the right hand of God, in very prominent positions. Archangels are typically depicted with their wings outstretched, along with flaming swords raised and wearing body armor. Although they make very cool tattoos, they aren’t often the subject matter of Guardian Angel designs.

Even though angels are primarily viewed as a Christian belief, other religions like Islam and Judaism also mention angels. In each of these religions they are considered to be a link between Heaven and Earth; a gift from God to protect and look over us.

Different Guardian Angel Tattoo Designs

Being protective in nature, Guardian Angels are generally seen with harps and halos, floating on clouds with their wings by their side, appearing serene or reflective. The bible itself does not get specific on how a Guardian Angel looks. In fact, wings were never mentioned, although angel tattoos are often seen with them and sometimes angel wings are tattooed on the back by themselves. These “phantom” wings symbolize the presence of a Guardian Angel without giving it a name or a face which the church has also never done.

One such angel, the cherub, is what many believe is most representational of a Guardian Angel, making it one of the most popular angel tattoo designs. The Old Testament of the bible depicts the cherub as a bearer of God’s throne. In Christianity and Islam the cherub is a celestial attendant of God.

Guardian Angel tattoos are very personal. Many people choose the Guardian Angel tattoo as a way to honor a lost loved one, depicting the person as an angel. They do this feeling that they may be their personal Guardian Angel. Others will use the Guardian Angel tattoo designs as a means to remind them that a loved one is safe. In the case of a lost child, an angel may be holding them. Other depictions may have the lost loved one walking with the angel as a reminder that they are safe in heaven and in the presence of God.

Other designs may include the Guardian Angel alone with their wings at their side and holding a harp. Some will be reading the bible, standing vigilant or looking toward heaven with their arms outstretched. All of these serve as a personal reminder to their faith and protection under God.

Guardian Angel Tattoos as Fashion Trends

Many celebrities who get ink take great pride in getting an angel as a tattoo. Soccer star David Beckham has an angel tattoo on his back along with a portrait of each of his two children on either side. It serves as a way to keep his children in his thoughts as well as knowing that God is watching over them and keeping them safe. David Beckham isn’t the only celebrity with angel tattoos:

  • Alyssa Milano from Who’s the Boss and Charmed
  • Fred Durst from the band Limp Bizkit
  • Drew Barrymore
  • Beyonce
  • Justin Timberlake
  • Melanie C.

Keep in mind that getting a tattoo is a permanent (and costly) endeavor. These types of tattoos may seem trendy, but they have a deeper, spiritual meaning. If you choose to get a Guardian Angel tattoo design make sure that it's a good representation of your spirituality and personal beauty.
