Johnny Depp as an Actor

Over the years Johnny Depp has become more than just a movie star. No other celebrity has captivated the masses more than Johnny Depp has. Beginning his career by doing numerous independent projects he eventually wound up in the first Nightmare on Elm Street. He soon starred on 21 Jumpstreet as a police officer that worked undercover in local high schools. Over the course of twenty years and some change he’s made some fantastic movies like Benny and Joon, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood, Cry-Baby, Platoon and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Out of all of his roles, none have caught the eye of the world as much as his role and Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. This is the only role where Johnny Depp has reprised a character. This is perhaps due to the fact that he views himself as a pirate of sorts himself. A love of the sea and sailing, being a free spirit traveler and his love of tattooing as not just an art but as a way to tell a story of your journey through life.

Captain Jack had a series of tattoos to enhance the character. But Johnny Depp Jack tattoo art can be seen real on the actor’s body as well as adoring fans.

Captain Jack Sparrow featured a tattoo of a Swallow over the waves flying away from his body. Tattoos like this were common among pirates. The swallow is a sign of life and home as once a sailor saw the swallow it meant that land was near. It also means and stands for safe harbor home – a very important thought for pirates.

Johnny Depp has the exact same bird tattoo but he has it reversed so that the swallow is flying toward his body instead of away. This particular tattoo represents Johnny Depp’s son; Jack, as his name is written below the waves. He wanted it like this so that Jack is always coming to him.

Besides the obvious tattoo of the swallow that is easily seen among Johnny Depp’s other pieces, there are several more that stand out. He has a tattoo of an inverted triangle above the memorial tattoo for his mother, Betty Sue. The inverted triangle is the ancient symbol to mean “feminine” and often refers to love – romantic or otherwise. The tattoo for his mom begins with the traditional heart with her name in a ribbon placed center but then some tribal ink is added to make it a really unique design.

The Ancient Feminine

Even Johnny Depp isn’t immune to bad relationships or falling into the pit of mistakes of getting your former love’s name tattooed on your body. Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder were engaged in the early 1990’s and he had a double banner tattoo added to his right bicep to match the one on the left which contains the tattoo dedicated to his mother. This "true love" tattoo reads “Winona Forever” and this obviously was not the case and he has since had it modified by removing part of "Winona" and shortening the banner so it now reads “Wino Forever”. This tattoo has become part of pop culture and entertainment lore.
