The Risks and Rewards of Lower Back Tribal Tattoos

Lower back tribal tattoos became popular in the 1990s, especially with teenage and twenty-something women, who loved the idea of a tattoo that would “peek” out of clothing. The mystery and allure associated with the lower back tattoo was, quite predictably, switched around in urban culture as being a sign of promiscuity and anything but attractive.

Not so affectionately known as the “tramp stamp,” lower back tattoos are now associated with both beautiful women and those who tend to live a more “carefree” life. In more recent years, some studies have shown concern over the relation between lower back tattoos and painkillers during childbirth. There has been discussion over the epidural, and the complications that have the potential of occurring when a woman has such a tattoo on her body. So far, it is nothing but speculation and urban legend, however some doctors take the claims seriously and are conducting further research.

Styles of Tattoo

While tribal tattoos can be any color, they are usually dark shades of brown, blue, or black. Some prefer fun colors like hot pink or green, but traditionally they are dark in color and give more of an illusion of “toughness” than its sweet and girly counterparts such as daisy chains or hearts. This type of tattoo is also synonymous with low-rise jeans, because no matter how discreet the intentions, most ink owners like to show them off!

The style of the tattoo also determines the location. Since the lower back is one of the widest areas of the body, it leaves plenty of room for the intricate and spacious design that the tribal tattoo is known for. It is also easier for a tattoo artist to complete a horizontal design, and this leaves room for more detail and advanced skills to be utilized. Lastly, the lower back area is not usually affected by changes of body weight, skin elasticity, etc., making it an ideal area for a tattoo inked with the intention of being long-lasting and fade proof.

Association with Sexual Harrassment

While many lower back tattoos are beautiful and worth flaunting in certain environments, unfortunately the above mentioned reputation of this particular design has caused some issues. Women with these tattoos sometimes complain of enduring crude comments from forward men, and often feel they are discriminated against based upon their tattoo choice. Is this truly the case? Just as in other circumstances, lower back tattoos are often purchased to help a woman feel sexy and more attractive. However, this attention can sometimes quickly turn negative. While boys will be boys, it is important to realize that sexual harassment is never acceptable behavior. Women should always assert themselves when possible and seek help if their tattoo (or any other physical feature) begins to warrant threats, slurs, or other forms of vulgar behavior.

What to Remember

Before choosing any tattoo, be sure to look at plenty of designs before getting inked. A tattoo is forever, and it is a decision you will always have to live with. Take your time, explore photos of other lower back designs, and consult others regarding your decision.

Also, it is important to remember a typical tribal tattoo, - depending upon the size of image you select, - takes time to apply. Some tattoo artists will break it into two visits, however most will do it all at once, meaning you should have a high threshold for pain or at least be prepared for some extended discomfort. Bring an mp3 player with you or some other form of distraction to pass the time, and the process will go more quickly. However, a lower back tribal tat is not for the faint of heart!
