Patriotic Tattoo Ideas
From LoveToKnow Tattoos
Anyone can be patriotic, regardless of their place of origin, and you may want to show that pride with a new tattoo, but there are many patriotic tattoo ideas available so which is right for you?
What is Patriotic to You
Take the time to examine how you feel about your country. If you are American you may look at the ideals of freedom as to why you are patriotic. You may also see the country’s devotion to its men and women in military service as the core sense of your patriotism. If your country of origin is the United Kingdom, then you may pledge your allegiance to the crown and so your patriotic tattoo ideas may include the crown. No matter your country of origin, or where you may call home these days, take the time to look deep inside yourself to see why you are patriotic and use that when planning your tattoo.
Several Patriotic Tattoo Ideas
Many of us live and breathe our homeland, regardless if you’re an American, and Englishman or German. It really doesn’t matter where you’re from because you will carry with you a heaping helping of pride for your homeland. Tattoos you may get can reflect that devotion.
The Flag
To many people, the flag of their country is the basis for everything patriotic. For this reason the flag can be the focal point of your patriotic tattoo. In the case of the United States, you can add many items to it that can scream patriotism. Your flag could be waving as if hanging from a flag pole. The flag could be shredded with holes and tears to symbolize the flag's condition in the National Anthem.
Other tattoo ideas include the American flag with several other symbols of patriotism. Everyone is familiar with the “ribbon campaigns”, as these ribbons can be found on nearly any car you come across. They can symbolize just about anything and for many the yellow ribbon represents a dedication to the country’s troops. After the events following September 11th, patriotic fervor was at an all time high and remembering that day has since been synonymous with patriotism. You can include with your flag tattoo words that inspire others or yourself such as “Live Free”.
Highlights of Patriotism
Maybe the idea of having a large flag tattooed on your body is not right for you and you just want something more subtle. You can still have a flag tattoo but not in the literal sense of it. A ring of 13 stars, for instance, can symbolize the original 13 colonies. You can continue with this same style by having the stars alternating between red, white and blue or even be a little more abstract and include three stripes in the center of the colors.
Iconography
Patriotism as well as religion all have their own kinds of iconography. The flag, for instance, is an icon of patriotism. The ribbon and the twin as well as the “ghost soldier” are all forms of icons in patriotism. Religion has crosses and their bibles just as much as a patriotic person will hold up the flag pole. You can take many patriotic tattoo ideas from the world around you.
Use the things that mean the most to you – what spells “patriot” to you and run with it. If you’re German you may view the fall of the Berlin Wall as a sign of true patriotism and your tattoo could be a piece of the wall with the words “Freedom Forever” in your native language. To the Irish, you may consider using the 4-leaf clover colored to those of your flag. If you come from Russia the sickle and hammer paired with the bear could be your sign of patriotism.
