Types of Tattoo Galleries

The Internet is a place to share and show off. Tattoo artists and tattooed people aren’t different than anyone else, and they use the Internet the same ways. Tattoo Galleries have sprung up everywhere, and while some may be better than others, all of them are places where people interested in tattoos can find kindred spirits and some great pictures. Some galleries are general, where anyone can post or view images, whether they’re drawings or pictures, but others are specifically for certain themes. Depending on the level of skill of the person who put the gallery together, it may even contain areas for people to vote on different pictures so that the general public can rate tattoos or images.

Flash

There are plenty of flash galleries where you can find examples of flash and even some free flash. One such site is TattooNOW. It offers a collection of flash and original art for viewers, but it also has pictures of tattoos that have been done.

Tribal

Since tribal tattoos so popular, it’s no wonder that there are galleries dedicated just to them. Tribals.com is one site that contains all tribal style tattoos, including separate galleries for suns, stars, zodiac and religious symbols, butterflies and dragonflies, arm bands, and others. Tribal.com also has an area to Rank Tattoos. While you can browse this site for free, you must pay ($9.95 for 30 days) if you want to see close-ups of the tattoos, add your own tattoo, or rank a tattoo.

Designs

While some tattoo galleries are going to be specialized to one type of design, there are also galleries that will simply break the designs down within one general gallery. These are great places to look if you’re trying to find a new tattoo and only have a general idea of what you want to get. Tattoos by Design does that. It has a flash gallery, a font gallery, and a celebrity tattoo gallery. It also contains a “Rate My Tattoos” gallery. One feature of Tattoos By Design is its name translation service that is staffed by humans, not just computer generated. Their employees can translate names into Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Hindi, Gujarati, and Sanskrit. (Most of this gallery is free; however, having your name translated is a fee-based service.)

Photo Galleries

If you’re looking to show off your tattoo or see real tattoos and not just the sterile artwork, then a tattoo photo gallery is the right place for you. Every Tattoo is a gallery of tattoo photographs. It is free to look at other tattoos and upload your own, but to upload, you must register. Some of the galleries area include aliens, angels, bugs, clowns, devils, flowers, hearts, Japanese, mermaids, moons, skeletons, stars, and wizards.

Many times photo galleries will have information on the artists and studios involved in the tattoo. This is a great place to look if you’re checking out an artist that isn’t local to you – you may be able to find enough examples of their work to know if they’re right for you without the travel.

Free Versus Pay

People always wonder if they get what they pay for. In the cash of tattoo galleries, you have to answer for yourself if it’s true. There are numerous free galleries, but there are also some excellent pay galleries.

Tattoo Pictures Museum claims to be “the biggest tattoo picture collection in the net.” It has lots of flash, and you can ever customize it online with their tools. They charge 20 Euros (approximately US$25) a month, but if you purchase a long-term membership, the monthly rate is reduced. For some people, the cost of this site will be worth it as they are very complete. You can look through the site for free, but there are many parts that are closed to non-members.

Using Tattoo Galleries

Be careful when using tattoo galleries. Just because the pictures and images are available don’t mean that they’re free for you to use them. Images may be copyright. If there is no information that tells you that the images are free, go ahead and email the owner of the site or image and ask. At best, the owner may be thrilled that you’re interested and give you permission to use it. At worst, you may need to pay for the image.

more and more of us are opting for a custom made tattoo design rather than choosing one straight off the wall. The main reasn being we just don't want to share the same tattoo with hundreds of other people.
