What My Tattoos Mean to Me
From LoveToKnow Tattoos
The Meaning of Tattoos
What is it exactly about tattoos that is so intriguing to me? It really is difficult to say. Of course, every person has their own concept of what a tattoo means, and it is from that meaning that the actual design stems from. Because there are such a multitude of factors involved in a person's tattoo, and because of the very nature and history of tattoos, it is impossible to generalize the meaning of a tattoo to an individual.
The Human Canvas
"The Human Canvas" is quite a common phrase. The comparison between canvas and flesh shows how tattoos are body art. For many people, myself included, tattoos have a deeper meaning. But my tattoos aren’t merely body art, and they aren’t artistic impression, they are windows to my soul. Every facet of my tattoos is a direct reflection of my personality, my very soul, if you will.
Design, coloring, style, every single piece of what tattoos are compromised of, each is imbued with my own unique personality traits. When I show my “tatts,” and believe me, show them I do, I am, in effect, exposing bits of the essence which is me — sharing a piece of my soul with the person I am showing them to. You can’t look at my tattoos and not come away with some basic knowledge of who I am.
The Tattoo Journey
Every time I show someone my “tatts,” I am reminded of the journey I took in the creation and design of my tattoo, the reason for getting it, and even the process of receiving it. It may not make much sense to a non-tattooed person, but showing mine evokes a response much like Pavlov’s dog; there is an inherent response within me that facilitates a reaction. The reaction is a flood of memories - some fond, others not so wonderful - but all spark pride in my journey.
So, when you meet me, if you are so fortunate as to receive a glimpse of my “tatts,” know that you are sharing something sacred with me—that I am gracing you with the honor of exposing my soul to you.
