Alexus, swelling is common after the procedure. Keep your eye on it to avoid potential infection. If you expereince pain and pus, seek a professional opinion from your physician. Otherwise, just practice proper care and let it heal! Good luck...

Blue-haired Hooligan, while I am happy the piercing is healing properly, I can not recommend home piercing on any terms. Please seek a professional for any future work.

I pierced my own lip just recently. I sterilized only with rubbing alcohol and a lighter. I marked the spot with a pen and put an eraser in my mouth; didn't even feel it go in until the safety pin was between my teeth. I left the safety pin in for a bit too long because a friend wanted it for a photo shoot and ended up having to leave it in for 5 or 6 days. That was the worst part by far. I got a 16 gauge ring into it and it healed completely within another week and a half. No problems cleaning with rubbing alcohol every day. No teeth or gum contact either. If you're smart about it, think it through before hand, and know what the risks are, do it yourself. Why pay someone else to do it? (I'm 17 and have pierced both of my own ears, my friend's lip, another friend's eyebrow, my own lip, and given multiple tattoos. Haven't had an infection or a problem yet.)

Daniel, thanks for sharing your experience. Please keep us posted as it heals! Enjoy...

Sad Little Angel, sorry to hear of your problematic piercing. Placement can be tricky and depends on the body anatomy. When you're ready, give it another go! Best wishes...

I just got my lip pierced(Left Side Labret) yesterdy(October 29th, 2009). No pain, just a pinch, when the rod was inserted and a little blood. Today my lip is a little swollen and a bit of puss came out, but at the moment no other complications. I'll be back to tell yall how things are going. Later ;8^P

i just took out my top lip piercing. it just wouldnt heal properly..i have a bottom lip one that is fine. it felt like i had nerve damage and it was rubbing against my top inscisor. that said i am going to get it repierced but higher this time to clear my teeth as soon as this hole clears up. i think this will help my problems, especially not being able to open my mouth properly cause the back of the jewellery was latching onto my tooth and getting stuck. was a little bit of a nightmare but im hoping to rectify it:) shame i paid an arm and a leg for it at a great studio, i guess their aesthetic positioning wasnt the right choice for me.

Lilly, while dangers may be rare, they should always be considered. We hope to inform all of our readers of the pros and cons of any body art to help them make the best decision for themselves. Minors will always need parental approval for body work, so as with the case of Stephanie, it looks like she will need to consider the facts, and get parental supervision! One can't happen without the other. Thanks for commenting and hope you enjoy our site!

This is so retarded, stop being so dramatic! Stephanie, get it done i have so many friends that have them... i'm sure it will look good!! what is it like a 1 and 1000000 chance your teeth will fall out? whoever made this is totally exaggerating

-- Contributed by: lilly

Stephanie, there will be plenty of time to pierce as you get older! I think waiting and thinking it out is a wonderful idea! :)

Rola, I am glad to hear your home piercing is in the healing stages, but please go to a professional for any futue body work!

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

I have a fake one and I wanted to get a real one,but after reading this,I am strongly wondering now. I think I am going to wait until I am older and then get it so I can look around first before I get it done..(I'm going to be 15.)

I've always wanted a lip piercing, But my dad was against it.And a couple of weeks ago i decided to take matters into my own hands and pierce myself. I spent a week searching about disadvantages and treatement and methods of sterlizing, and finally I decided to do it.I used mostly sterile Detol soup, New syringe, mouthwash, sterile jewelary, and I did it. I had to take it off about a couple of days later for a few hours and this caused it to scab over, and form a brown cover. But turns out this was not caused by the piercing, but my the sterilizing solution i used to clean around the piercing (it needed to be diluted with water first in case of alergic reactions) After the scabbing disappaeared and the swelling went away my lip is very fine now and Im having no trouble whatsoever with it.And it's also not touching my teeth or gum so no damage to either.I clean it daily with sterilizing solution and mouthwash. And keep it on at all times since my dad already found out. The usual puss discharge is present thought but I read that that is normal and is the body's way to clean the wound. (keep in mind im only 15)

Corrina, I couldn't agree more! Thanks for speaking up!

I am 14 & have a lip piercing! The only way any of this would happen is if u are actualy dumb enuf & not responsible enuf 2 take care of it!! I am not the greatest child but i can take care my my piercings & if someone wants one than great....but i've meet SO many people that want a piercing & then they never take care of it! So if u want one then u should wait also! Unless your like me & u want what u want! XD

-- Contributed by: LOVE Lip Piercings

Amanda, thanks for sharing your experiences. I agree, finding a piercer you can trust is crucial, an often jewelry does need to be changed to fit the piercing and the location better.

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

i have my lip pierced 3 times. i have snakebites, and also a monroe. i haven't had any major problems, and i've had all 3 piercings for over 2 years. the biggest problem was finding a short enough post for the stud in my monroe piercing. it was starting to rub on my gum line and cause irritation. every great, great once in awhile, since my post on the bottom 2 piercings are extra long (so it's easier to change/clean), i will catch it on my teeth when i chew. otherwise, find a piercer you trust, and get it done. very cute piercings.... :)

I got my lip peirced aaannnddd The worst thing that happened was the mouthwash that I had to swish with after eating. I also got it done in a small town. And they sucked. Badly. My lip was swollen and pussing it was gross. So I went to a local peircing shop and you could smell the disinfectants the moment you walked in. I got them to "repeirce" it and its better now. As Long as you have a good person peircing your lip, Its all good. I'm a teenager too, and I work at a Community Center. My Boss said it was better if I had the peircing, because they don't want Adults and kids thinking that the only good and decent people in the world are peircing and tattoo free.

    • There are some studs you can buy that are clear and nude, if your thinking about what people might think about your new peircing at work.
-- Contributed by: Beth

Nupur, take your time and use thes back and forth thoughts to make your decision. You don't have to like piercings just because you are a teen, and you don't need to worry what other people think either. Do what YOU love, and you'll always make the right choice!

i want to pierce my lips but i m scared to do it after reading all this..m very passionate about body arts and sumtimes i think dat jst bcoz i m a teenager m so crazy bout all dis & whats the harm in it ,if u get bored wid the whole idea u can take out ur ring/labret stud & u'll left out wid jst a dent..and sumtims i think its jsy nt an easy task to go through tongue piercing coz its an permanent asset on ur face as long as ur alive..and jst as tina said dat she took out her stud jst to find out a job bcoz we all know dat it creates a negative impression on us though we r not.. SO GUYZ I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO..IS NYBODY DER TO HELP ME??

I had a regular Libret piercing years ago. I took it out in order to find a job. I recently saw a picture of a virtical libret piercing and I really want one. I'm just wondering, with the piercing go straight through your lip, are there any dangers with getting it done? Like major blood vessels or nerves? I just want to know before I go and get it done. I live in a fairly small town where piercings aren't that popular. So if there are dangers with getting it pierced, not in aftercare or down the road, I'd like to know if I should maybe travel to a bigger city to find someone more experienced in it.

Thanks Sherrie for sharing your expert advice!

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

Hi Marguita,

I have the exact same piercing and I'm a piercer myself. It is normal for eventually the piercing to sing into the lip. This prevents the piercing rubbing up against the tooth and gum. Just make sure you keep pulling the piercing out (like you have) to ensure that the skin doesn't begin to grow over the piercing.

If it worries you then it may be best to purchase a longer bar or possibly look at buying a lip ring. Just make sure the bar you buy isn't too long as it may be caught on the tooth and pulled, and can enhance tooth errosion and decay.

Ensure your ball on the piercing isn't too large or it may begin to sag, and too small a ball may begin to vanish into the piercing.

Good luck with your piercing and hope you enjoy it.

hey my name is jasmine i dont have a piercing but for the girl marquita i think u should really go back and see what the problem is girl...........

-- Contributed by: jasmine

Marquita, Sorry to hear of all the troubles...definatly go back and see the piercer for some feedback and suggestions!

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

I had the lower corner of my lip done 5/14/09. The first couple of days it hurt terribly and it was swollen. The ball fell of a couple times, which made matters worse...a few times I considered taking the piercing out all together, but I paid 2 much money so I basiclly decided 2 just stick with it. I've had it in 4 about a wk now and I'm not sore or swollen, but the flat part on my inner lip keeps going into my lip...like my lip is almost overtaking the piercing, so I have to kinda pull on it with my teeth, but after a few seconds it goes back in...I'm not sure if that is normal or safe so I'm going back 2 the place where I got it pierced and see what he says....

I peirced my lip myself about 3 days ago and nothing bad has happened, but it might be infected. I use a earring in my lip, and my lip has not falled off yet hahaha. But if you have a good way to clean lip peircings or nowhere to get great deals on peircings, chat with my on myspace, search Emily Keillor!!!

Trista, I would follow Ryan's advice and keep the area clean. Everybody heals differently. In the future, please visit a professional for a piercing!

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

Well, if you keep it clean then there should not be puss. Puss = bad. When I got my lip done there was blood; however, not everyone bleeds. It should not be that tight however because it needs room for swelling. I would loosen it up, make sure to wash your mouth with 1 cup water (distilled) to 1/8 tsp of sea salt In future instances only go to a professional with a decent bit of experience.

-- Contributed by: Ryan

I recently had my brother pierce the right side of my lip. He tightened the ring in so tight that its unable to move around inside the hole. Its so tight that my lip isnt even swollen. There has been no puss or blood in it either. Is this a good thing?

-- Contributed by: Trista!

Corin,

You obviously did not read this article. The Author is giving you the ability to make an informed decision; she is not saying they are a bad thing. You may want to learn the difference between "know" and "no". Also, it would be smart to grasp other basic writing skills, such as comma splices and fragments, before you wrtie a critique.
-- Contributed by: Ryan

imm getting my third i have a infection in one bu its getting better so yeh...no probs yet corin aid take care!

-- Contributed by: Jordan

Corin, Great tips, thanks for sharing.

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

If you don't take care of your lip ring, then no ... that there will be problems. And hopefully when you are getting a piercing you should get it done professionally. These "complications" are if you're an idiot who doesn't take care of your lip piercing. So I don't think this article is very good. It's very one sided against lip piercings. I've had my lip ring for two months and haven't had any problems because I take CARE of it.

-- Contributed by: Corin

There's always something risky to and decision you make in life. Whether its a piercing.. Smoking a cigarette.. Driving your car.. Even eating. The point is ppl are going to do it reguardless its a way of life and ppl this day in age are stubborn. They hear don't smoke it gives you cancer while smoking a cigarette. They hear don't eat fast food it'll make you unhealthy and over weight. Then go out to the drive thru to get a meal. The point is not many ppl care. They see that its their life and they'll do whatever they want. Btw I just got my first lip piercing. Plan on gettin another in a few weeks!

Dandon, there are potential side effects you should be aware of prior to any form of body art or piercing. We strive to help readers make informed decisions. Good luck with your piercing and keep reading!

i think it is not dangers that is becouse my freanf have had one for more than 5years and noting happend to her. aND SHE DID IT BY her self........

so dont say it is dangers

and yes i am planing to gat one.

-- Contributed by: dandon

Well.. yeah I agree that the beginning bit is due to neglect. But the tooth thing is serious.. and yeah even if it seems that you're lip ring doesn't touch your teeth, at points it does - unavoidably - and that little bit builds up after a long time. Remember, 5 months is not a long time. I've had my lip rings ( 6 of them ) for about 4 years now.. and slowly but surely there is visible damage, faint but there non the less.. Even though all of them were carefully placed with my teeth and a gums in mind, rubbing occurs... So yeah.. it's not such a bad article..

-- Contributed by: stabby

this is so stupid. half of this happens because people don't take care of it. i have a lip ring and i took care of it and i never got an infection, i don't play with it, i am careful when i put on a shirt, and i haven't gotten sick. so suck on that dumbass

This is a very biased article. I pierced my OWN lip. And ive had it for about, 5 months, and my lip ring doesnt touch my teeth, or gums.

The most important thing is to take care of it, and keep it clean, and dont play with it.

-- Contributed by: Sheridan

I have a lip piercing but am thinking about taking it out. You know lip piercings are hard to take out once you have one. You get nice comments from your friends about them and you kinda feel like you have something that most people don't have or wouldn't get. The truth is, when you have a lip piercing it comes with problems as of everything does. Heres some of the things you will start to face down the line.

1. You will start to feel uncomfortable

2. You will lose the ball or ring that keeps your lip open and can even swallow it.

3. You will get lip infections which can hurt.

4. People will teat you like crap theres no way around it. The first thing most people stare at is your lip ring and after that its on.

5. You will get sick more often then you did before. That metal is like a trap for germs.

6. Your teeth will start to hurt. If you wear a stud it comes with a plate on the back and rubs against your teeth, a ring is a little better but still hits your teeth.

7. You will start playing with it which is not good. You take the risk of knocking the ring or stud into one of your teeth, and shattering a tooth is never good.

8. while eating you will bite down hardon your ring no doubt about it! I cannot tell you how many times I have bite my lip ring and by gosh it HURTS!

9. Getting your lip ring caught on something and tearing our lip.

and last but not least, the major scare of lip rings!!

10. losing the ball to your ring and waking up with the ring clamped on your lip turning blue!!

I did this the first week of me having a lip ring. I woke up and looked in the mirror and saw my side of my lip was blue turning purple, it was like a horror scene had just started. I was shaking and panicing and had removed it by using bent nose pliers!

So before you get a lip ring..think..do you really want to lose half of your lip down the line?

Great article, really great to see the dangers of this piercing brought into the limelight.

One smaller danger: Bad breath, a social taboo which is a bi-product of a build up of bacteria which could affect the piercing. It comes from not cleaning properly!

Stephaine: I'm glad you have such faith in the body piercing industry - i for sure as hell don't and i work in it. There is no official qualification to become a piercer, any crack with a needle can open a parlour and I have heard many instances of these piercers reusing needles - fishing them back out of bins - on different clients. Many people also self pierce with things like used sewing needles. Even professional piercer's are in danger of things like 'needle sticks' (... with a dirty needle) should the client move suddenly etc. So HIV in this industry is a very real risk. Luckily Hep B and A are something piercer's can (And should) get vaccinated against.

gots2no: Bioplast labrets do lessen the chance of the oral damage because they are much more flexible but if your piercing is new i suggest going back to your piercer and getting them to change it if that is what you want as doing it yourself will put a lot of stress on the piercing and interfer with your healing. Bioplast / bioflex is a type of PTFE and is suitable for the body to heal around, acrylic is not. You will also need the right size jewellery which your piercer will know :D

Cod-Fish101: I have to honestly say you are going to find it hard to find a GOOD piercer willing to pierce you so young. I know thats not what you want to hear but professional piercers are artists and we have these things called morals :P. I'm not trying to point the finger, to nag and whine and say youuurrr tooo youuung but the fact of the matter is piercing are permanent body modifications. Even if you later take it out there will always been some sign it was there be it a bump, red mark or scar no matter how small you'll always know! While i also hate to generalise i have seen it happen too many times with people your age not too: generally peer pressure gets in the way of your true desires as does the need to rebel to be different and so on - you need to get a piercing because you truly want it for the rest of your life. Teenagers are reknowned for being a bit less than hygienic too and aftercare is such a massive part of piercing that neglection is not an option, you need to follow a strict routine for around 6 weeks twice a day.... Like i said i am sure you are responsible and that your parents have given their blessing but if you are really serious about this piercing then wait 3 years until you can legally be pierced by an artist and not a crack with a needle who just wants your money. I apologise for going on but i felt it was important to explain, if you are still set on finding one i have an article on my website that should help you know what you should be looking for in a piercer.

If anyone would like to comment / poke /ask a question or if you would like a detailed aftercare guide to help you look after your piercing and avoid these dangers please feel free to use and abuse my website: titaniumsenthralled.co.nr

Cod-fish, you will need to check local tattoo parlors for piercers. In addition, find out the age restriction/requirements in Canada. Make sure you visit a licensed and inspected establishment and that they use sanitized equipment. Best wishes.

Gots2kno, some people prefer Bioplast. I would advice you ask your piercer for their recommendation. You may want to wait a bit before you change it out. Good luck!

Stephanie, The risk should always be considered. Make sure needles are sterilized thoroughly. Transmission is more likley on unclean needles. Better safe than sorry.

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

Blah blah blah , Hepatitis , HIV? what the ... , if your that close in contact with those disease's i doubt you will get them by putting metal in your lip , and how would you get HIV from a needle , unless you walked up to someone and said , bleed on this needle so i can make it extra tasty , for when i pierce my lip !:) i'm so sick of hearing YOU'LL DIE IF YOU PIERCE THINGS! ahah when !

i have my lip peirced on the bottom left side and yes at first it swells and the bar can get n the way but as soon as you can put in a normal size bar everythings fine.i don't even notice it anymore and it doesn't even touch my teeth. i say if you want it go for it just be prepared for the first few weeks to be a bit awkward.

-- Contributed by: Amanda

As a dental hygienist, it is important to get a periapical x-ray of the teeth adjacent to the piercing to check for boneloss. Bitewing x-rays are taken of posterior teeth at regular dental check ups and may not show bone loss. Anterior teeth are only x-rayed every 3-5 years on a full mouth series of x-rays. By then, damage is done. If your teeth are loose, you have bone loss from the piercing.

I don't think it that big of a deal this is my second time getting my lip pierced.....along with the piercer you need to know how to take cake of your piercing as well yes it is going to swell at first....a needle was shoved through your flesh.....then it will go down...thats the purpose of larged rings

I had my snake bites done about 9 months ago, and at first they swelled up so bad, I had to go back to my artist and have him put in bigger hoops. In the end I really like how they came out. Occaisionally they'll bother me and I'll put in retainers for a couple of days and it's all good.

I've had my lip pierced for half a year and I got my libret done. The flat back libret studs they have can rub on your teeth and gumms and it made my gum go down... But I switched to a ring and now all is good. If you ensist on using a libret stud make sure the flat back part is little and not big or it will rub on your teeth and not only cause serious pain but it will rub your gums down and they will not grow back.

I recently had the right side of my lip pierced. That night following the piercing it started to bleed slightly. I called my piercer and he told me to put ice on it and that it was common. The bleeding stopped. Well the following days my piercing was doing perfect. Swelling going down and everything. Until 4 am just a few hours shy of a week since I had it pierced I woke up with a mouthful of blood. It was just gushing out. Finally I took the ring out and went to the ER. They had to burn my lip with something called..(I think this was the name of it..lol) a sulfate (?) stick just so the bleeding would stop. I've been doing research and nothing has turned up on why that might have happened? Any ideas? I possiblely want future piercings since mky eyebrow went fine...

Amber, all you may need is to take better care of your piercings, and don't pick at or touch them.

xtina, as the article said, a lip piercing can be dangerous. But if your desire to get it done can override the danger, have at it. Make sure you get a very good piercer.

I can't seem to keep my ears pierced no matter how hard I try. I've had them repierced a few times...the first time it was because it got infected, the second time was because I found out I was allergic to nickel, and the third because they wouldn't really heal. I am wondering since I've had a prob with my earlobes, that I should avoid other piercings.

Helen, you should NEVER pierce your own lip or any body part. there are so many complications involved, and you could do serious, long-term damage to yourself. is it worth it? i don't think so. love your body, okay? you're worth it! :) take care and god bless.

please do more research before you continue. take care.

hye, just to say to anyone reading this, before getting any peircing done, make sure you ask them what they know about hepatitis, and if they say they dont... dont let them peirce you. make sure you read about it on the internet first, or go to your library. my mum has it and ive seen the effects it had on her and our family. its a disease of the blood and liver and causes inflamation (swelling, redness) in the liver which can lead to cirrosis of the liver. it IS treatable with drugs like interferon, but these leave you run down, emaciated and very ill. the thing about hepatitis is you can have it for years before you know about it. and somtimes you can die from it before any symptoms show. my mum got hers from tattoos done with unsterilised equipment. when having a piercing, make sure the needle comes from SEALED packaging, the piercer wears gloves and has no open wounds on their hands. when having a tatoo, the artist should always used a sterilised gun, use a fresh needle from a sealed, sterilised packet, use a FRESH pot of ink and also wear gloves and have no open wounds on their hands. hepatitis tears lives apart, dont let it happen to yours.

Honestly i just got my lip done yesterday and i'm slightly concerned. the piercer tho he was professional didn't exactly pierce it the way i was expecting. the exit of the piercing on the outside of my lip is boarderline on my lip and boarderline not. and i'm quite concerned that this may cause problems later on. If anyone knows that this may be harmful please...comment back.
