Kuku, you are an invaluable resource to our readers. Keep adding your tips!

Sorry one more note:

MonkeyLuvar: You should not be turning the earrings, this is a very outdated practise and has actually been shown to slow healing. It grinds dirt into the piercing and also breaks the healing flesh that is trying to turn, just leave them alone :P

This is a good article and i really liked the 'when not to pierce' bit but as a piercer i worry that you aren't mentioning the risks involved in guns!

Not only are the guns impossible to sterilise, damage the ear nerves, use inadequate jewellery but are wielding by people that sometimes only have 30mins of training and no idea what to do if they go wrong. They are also no where near as accurate as a needle.

Anna: Ear rim piercings take 4 - 18 months to heal properly, you should not change the jewellery for at least another two months. I'm glad its all healing well though!

Jenny: If you visit my website ( titaniumsenthralled.co.nr ) i have a detailed article as to why guns are so bad that you may want to read :D

monkeyluvar: Don't bother with those cleaning solutions you are right they wont be cleaning your ears properly. Instead use 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to 1 mug boiling water left to cool till bearable and used to completely immerse each piercing in for 5-10mins. This will pull out anything trapped in the piercing and loosen crusties so you can gently clean them away with cotton buds. It also opens the capillaries and helps blood and oxygen get to the piercing which reduces swelling and speeds healing. Again a full ear lobes piercing cleaning guide can be found on my website ( titaniumsenthralled.co.nr ) should you want to learn more.

Julien: Generally i would listen to your piercer! Those fake plugs are quite heavy and can put a lot of stress on the piercing. They also get easily caught and if she says the material is not suitable she's probably right - surgical steel isn't the best thing for you to heal around metal wise titanium is - which might be what you were pierced with. There are also different grades of steel and only 316lvm /316l is suitable for you to heal around other grades will cause problems. You said you have one in the other ear? I am assuming that is an 'old' piercing if it is a new piercing you might be better off changing the jewellery to a barbell or labret to make sure it heals properly. As for the other ear you can put in the fake plug after 8 weeks, so its not that long really!

I hope this helps you all out and improves this great article even more. If anyone would like anymore advice or for full, detailed, cleaning guides please feel free to stumble into my site ( titaniumsenthralled.co.nr ) and ask / badger / poke / read or simply loaf around :D

All the best, Ku xxx

i had the rim of my ear pierced about 9 weeks ago and it has been fine, no infections and there is no swelling. i'd like to know what would be the ideal time that i could take the bar out and swop it for another bar or a ring. what is the average time you could do this? thanks if you're able to help.

my husband says that it is safer to pierce my 5 month old daughter with a hollow needle, something they use at a tatoo parlor.... is this true? I want to get her ears done soon and want to do it the safest way.

i just got my ears pierced and am having trouble cleaning them. I'm worried the inside of the hole isn't getting clean, because i have trouble getting the cotton swab up below the earing. is that o.k.? i am also worried because it hurts after i turn my left one, but not my right. Is that kinda normal, or should i be doing something different? I don't know why my left is different than my right, but please help. I'm kinda worried. ( btw- i have sensitive skin, and i had an allergic reaction from wearring a certain ring. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Piercing instruments bad... alot of non freehand piercings look like theyre sinking in (the skin that is). The reason for that is the trauma the gun/instrument inflicts by forcing a dull object (even if may appear slightly sharp) through the skin. If that's not enough, a piercing stud does not give adequate room for swelling that occurs after a piercing is done. if you just want a standard earhole size but don't want it done with a gun at the mall and the doctor won't do it, just go to the piercing shop and as for 18 gauge. If they won't do 18 because they're worried it may get ripped out, ask for 16 gauge. You can wear regular earrings in a 16 gauge just fine.

UHm i had a question. I just go tmy ears pierced and i have a fake plug in one ear for starts to get used to the look i want later and i bought the other plug too because the piercer said she cant insert it into the other ear supposedly cause of a material difference eventhough they are both made of steel. I was wondering if anything could happy say i remove the small barbell i have in the one ear and replace it with the fake plug i have so my ears both have the same jewelry. Are there any consequences of that? I just dont want to look like shakespeare. Sincerely Julien
