mglover, thanks for sharing your experience. Hopefully you are back on track on the road to healing! Enjoy your piercing!

I got an idustrial and I love it. Ive had it almost a month. It didnt hurt getting it done but when I went to go sleep it felt like someone punched me in the ear really hard. cleaning hurt but it felt better afterwards.

Megan, Awesome! Glad you love it- thanks for sharing your experience!

I got an industrial piercing, over a week ago. And I've had all good with it, accept getting it caught on clothes. But I love mine and the pain was well worth it.

-- Contributed by: Megan

Shelby, see how it goes. You may just be allergic to the material (surgical steel?) Maybe try switching to another metal like gold once the swelling and pain subside. If what you're doing works and you see a decrease in swelling and puss, it may have just been your body's initial reaction to the piercing. I would recommend you continue your current treatment, and seek medical care if it does not subside. Again, consider switching metals once the swelling goes down and you can take the current jewelry out!

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

Thank you Jodie. I started actually soaking my ear in sea salt just yesterday and bought this bactine spray. The swelling seems to be going down as well as the other icky stuff. Do you think it's safe to keep it and just keep using the new techniques?

-- Contributed by: Shelby

Shelby, it sounds infected. Please remove the piercing ASAP and visit your doctor!

I got mine done a week ago and I don't know if what I'm experiencing is a normal after effect. My ear is throbbing. So red and swollen it almost seems twice the size of my other unpierced ear. I use the H20 spray and I don't know if it is making a difference at all. Around the piercing there is a constant blood/puss (?) build up. I really love the piercing but is this normal? Is it because it's new?

-- Contributed by: Shelby

I just got my industrial done today. My friend and i decided yesterday that we wanted new piercings cause today was her birthday :) I'm getting my second cartiledge on my other ear and my third hole soon

-- Contributed by: KM

Lolo, you are already on the road to healing. Congrats for your new pierce!

I just got my industrial piercing today! i was building up the courage for months. it didnt hurt as bad as i thought it would. the pain only kicked in about 10 minutes later.

-- Contributed by: lolo

i just had my industrial done saturday. it didn't hurt me at all. i am able to move it around and play with it and it has only been 3 days. i clean it everyday several times a day with antibactierial hand sanitizer and a q-tip. it doesn't hurt at all anymore either. i guess i'm just a quick healer. but the piercer went straight to the bar. he didn't use 2 different earrings. as far as pain....... it sounded like it should have hurt because i could hear the flesh ripping but i didn't feel it at all. my ear never did swell up. it just turned red for a couple hours. but i can't wait to get another piercing. i love the process.

I had already had my cartilage pierced and then about 3 years later I got the upper part of my ear pierced and about a year after that (3 months ago) I went in and had the piercing place put the bar in for me and it is still really swollen especially around the upper piercing.... it gets all crusty and is very soar. I have used soap, saline, warm water, rubbing alchhol, but nothing makes it feel better. Any suggestions please????

Josie, most people think so... but of course pain varies amongst individuals!

D0ES iT HURT MORE 0R LESS THAN liP??

-- Contributed by: JOSIE

I really want to get an industrial piercing done, but I am a little hesitant on the pain factor, I have my nipple done, and navel...does it hurt worse than that? I really want it done so if anyone has any facts on what to do to make it a little easier that would be awesome!

i think that da industral percing is cool i think it looks nice and only uniqe people can where then but hey dat just my opion

Cortney, Very interesting! Most people react differently to pain and managment. Good to hear yours was bearable! Thanks for sharing.

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

I think it is so crazy that almost everyoe i have talked to has said the industrial is these most painful piercing when i didnt think it hurt at all and i have both of my ears done

-- Contributed by: Cortney

Carla, Every piercing heals differntly. Glad to hear you are happy with yours! Thanks for contributing.

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

The industrial piercing is the most painful piercing i have gotten, but it is the one that i like the most. The industrial is quick and easy to pierce, but is takes a long time to heal!!!

-- Contributed by: CARLA

I just pierced my anit-helix after having my helix done for a couple months. It is only the day after but it hurts like hell to try even move the bar. I have a 12g clear straight bar because the hoop hurt too much. I wanted to allow healing time between the piercing before I put the industrial bar in, for easier cleaning. How long approximately should I deal with the hurting before I go to a walk in clinic?

-- Contributed by: Jessi

Megan, piercings can take a while to heal and may hurt on occassion when bumped. Continue caring and good luck!

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

I love my Industrial Piercing. Its different and so me. Ive had mine for about 2 months now :) Its been kinda infected but not bad i just try to keep it clean. Now it only hurts if something hits it :)

-- Contributed by: Megan Harrold

You're not supposed to use neosporing and petroleum-based products on your piercing because it traps bacteria insie the wound (ironically, these products are meant to kill bacteria). Furthermore, it prevents the wounded area from receiving air, slowing down the healing process. Maybe that's why the infection is occuring?

I have an industrial and have just been washing with Dial antibacterial soap and sea salt soaks and it's been healing perfectly.

i want an industrial so badly. im 18 now and i've wanted one since i was about 13. i'm hoping on getting one in the next week or so. :]]

-- Contributed by: katie

I got my Industrial done maybe 2 weeks ago. But befor I got it done I decidded to read up on it just to have an idea of what I was in for, Everything I had read was about how painful the expierence was. I was so nervous! But It actually wasnt that bad for me. Personally I think That the discomfort I went through was far worse than the pain of actually getting it pierced. I have been Using Bactine && Neosporin twice a day. I still cant sleep on it. It started to get better But I think its infected now. Its swollen && Has a purple/ dark red tint to it. The second hole Bleeds alot and Is gross. My friends mom looked at it && said that My ear is eating the bar. ha ha Its pretty gross But Im trying to tuff it out && Clean it up.

-- Contributed by: Abbie

April, sorry to hear of your painful experience. Glad it is healing up quickly! Hang in there! If it gets worse, visit the doc or remove.

Got mine done a week ago. It was done by using one needle. the piercing itself did not hurt, but what did hurt was feeding the needle through the pierced ear and piercing the other hole. It was also painful when the piercer placed the jewelry on and screwed in the pieces of the barbell. Aftercare is definitely a must. Make sure to use solution and soak the pierced ear in a cup of warm water mixed with 1/4 tsp table salt. I felt pain for about 2 days and this would just be leaving the ear alone. After, it would only hurt when accidently bumped into or during cleaning. During the first 2 days, the entire ear would bleed - dripping blood. Now, blood would only be detected when i would stick a cotton swab by the hole to clean it. Now i can somewhat lay on my ear, but not sleep on it. It's swelling just a little, and the bruising is starting to go away. It still hurts to clean it, but i'm seeing major improvement in just one week. everyone is different when it comes to the healing process. i thought i would just share my experience with you. before getting this piercing, just ponder on whether or not you are ready for the aftercare that is to come.

-- Contributed by: April

oh ......well alot of people told me it didnt hurt for them and i have a high threshhold for pain so im going to get it done tommorow.

-- Contributed by: Riley

Wat up: yes you do have to be a certain age to get his piercing professional. It all depends on the rules of the country where you live while its not a legal age for piercing itself - it is a legal age for consent for someone (i.e. doctor) to alter your body in someway. It's known as the age of consent and acknowledges the person is now old enough to make choices about their own bodies. If you are pierced under this age without parental consent the piercer could be charged as a molestor. Most EU countries and American states it is 16.

-- Contributed by: kuku

I pierced both of my industrials myself, approximately five days apart. It definitely hurt, but only just about as much as a regular cartilage piercing would.I'd recommend you go to a pro, but it wasn't a bad experience. Good aftercare is a MUST! And a long bar during the healing time helps. Good luck with yours! I adore my industrials. <3

-- Contributed by: minny

hey. im getting my second industrial for my 13th birthday.(just a couple weeks away) im really excited..not many people has industrials and it doesnt hurt..cant wait XD

-- Contributed by: jonesy

I JUST GOT MINE DONE TODAY! IT IS SO NOT PAINFUL BUT DEPENDING ON HOW SENSITIVE YOU ARE YOU WILL BLEED. I BLED A LIL BUT NOTHING TO BAD IT LOOKS AWESOME AND I RECOMMEND ADRIAN FROM WHITE BUFFALO ON PECAN IN MCALLEN TEXAS! HE IS SO CHILL AND MAKES THIS A HAPPY EXPERIENCE! BEING MY FOURTH PIERCING IT IS COOL.

You'll need to unscrew them both, I would recommend one at a time so that the surface isn't too slippery. Any piercing studio will have replacement balls, even colored or designed ones if you choose. A reputable piercer will also help you replace them.

-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalak

Uhm, I was woundering, How do I take the balls off of the barbell? I dont want to take the actuall barbell out, I just want to put different balls on the ends. Is it possible to take BOTH of the ends off?

Another really detailed article, nicely written - again i hope you don't mind if i offer you a few pointers?

Firstly an industrial piercing is mostly done with a 16 or a 14 gauge - 12 is a bit too large.

The piercing doesn't bleed due to the size of the needle, it bleeds because there are a few minor blood vessels near the top of your ear! Its also not more painful because of the size of the needle, after all other cartilage piercings are done at the same gauge, its more painful because you are being piercing twice in the same ear!

The ointment suggested as aftercare is a very bad idea, creams are petroleum based and as such cannot be absorbed by the body. This means it lingers inside the piercing trapped dirt and creating a nice warm, moist place for bacteria to breed in. This is especially bad in upper ear piercings as a bad infection could lead to ear collapse.

H20cean is a great little product but isn't suitable as a sole cleaning product as it doesn't clean as well as a sea salt soak (1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to 1 mug boiling water left to cool till bearable then used to fully immerse the piercing in for 4-10mins). H2Ocean is great as additional aftercare though because once the pores have been opened by a sea salt soak they can absorb the vitamins and minerals packed in the spray much better, speeding healing.

The use of two smaller bars is also because a industrial bar can put a lot of pressure on the ear - especially if it is slept on and complicate healing times for both piercing holes. I say two smaller bars because healing with BCRs in will cause the fistula (piercing hole) to heal circular and when it comes to putting in a industrial bar it may not sit well as the holes will be the wrong shape.

Healing time for this piercing is 4 -18 months. It can take a very long time because of the position of the piercing - it gets knocked / led on a lot etc.

If anyone has any problems or would like a detailed cleaning guide please feel free to pop along to my aftercare site ( titaniumsenthralled.co.nr ) and poke / prod me or any of the articles on there!

Best of luck improving this article, i hope i have been of some help!

Ku xx

wow..im only 12 and i had my industrial done 4 months ago..its already healed.

-- Contributed by: jonesy

I got an industrial done about a month ago and honest to god it was the most painful thing I have ever experienced (even more so than when I broke my arm) I couldn't touch my ear for a good 13 hours (don't know if that's normal) but it's healing well now so I'm happy.

I absolutely love it...even if my parents don't lol

Becky, Hope it heals soon and that you enjoy it!

So i got mine done 3 days ago, and i thought it was quite painful, but bareable. Definately my most painful piercing, but i will wait and see how it heals and turns out. Hopefully it goes good.

I think that this is one of the best piercings you can get i know mine is amazing and it healed in about 5 weeks. Althought it is very painful the first 2 weeks or so it doesnt hurt at all anymore.

-- Contributed by: Kara

i got mine done after begging my mom for two and half years...i screamed...i am so happy i got it done but it hurts to sleep on and it some how got infected...i love it

-- Contributed by: Natassia

I got mine pierced about 3 weeks ago. I've just been using Dial soap and water. 3x a day at first, now down to once a day. It seems to be healing well. It actually hurt less than my eyebrow, but that lady screwed it up real bad. When i got that done I turned extra pale and threw up. With my industrial I flinched a little when the second hole was being pierced and when she put the jewelry through the second hole. Overall, I'm very happy I got it done. I actually had it recorded and put on youtube. channel name is JohnsBoogabear. enjoy!

-- Contributed by: Kayla

i got mine done mid august. Its healing up really well i can even somewat sleep on it. and I love that I got it done!!

-- Contributed by: Jackson

jus got mine done and it does hurt really bad but mine didnt bleed and i havent had any problems so far

-- Contributed by: dr_frost

I got my done last April, I had lots of trouble with it...keloids all the time, couldn't sleep on it, bleed all the time. After I went through all this I love my piercing. It take a lot of time everyday to make sure that is taken care of but it all worth it at the end. I used witchhazel and dial soap to straighten everything out.

-- Contributed by: Ashley

I just got my piercing done like today (23 august 08) and it bleed soo much and its sooo sore atm lolz

but im hapi i got it done :D

-- Contributed by: Carolyn

i love the industrial ive been trying to get my mom to let me get one but i went with my bf and hers didnt bleed or hurt but she did take a few advils before but still

-- Contributed by: tatyana

i just got mine done four days ago (july 21) and the anti-helix really didnt hurt the helix hurt a bit more (only enough for me to make a face) but if i can tolerate it anyone can. just keep breathing steady thru the whole thing and its really not bad. and everyone told me my ear was too small for it..everyone but the guy who actually pierced it. keep ur hair pulled back tho bc it will get caught and it is going to be sore.

-- Contributed by: Tiffany

I also got my Industrial on the 21st of july, it barley hurts right now but it just started bleeding the top hole is, and i have no idea why. im wondering if its normal or what so yeah.

-- Contributed by: Melissa

Im 17 and I just got my industrial done. tonight. (July 21, 2008) What i would recommend when getting this piercing is bring midol to take afterwards. Midol helps with swelling/pain/etc. really helped me right now it just hurts a bit if i accidently hit it. As for when i got it pierced. Just take deep breaths and stay calm. It felt like a hard pinch in the first hole. As for the second, as you might have already heard before, it hurts a bit more, but the pain only lasts for a few seconds. If you have a good piercer the whole process will be done in jiffy and you'll be all set.

My advice would to be if you are really wanting this piercing don't let the crap people say about how much it hurt be a draw back. Its worth it and overall it or well mine didn't and still isn't hurting bad at all.

-- Contributed by: Paige

i got mine done about 2 days ago july 12 the first hole didnt hurt but the second one hurt like crap but so far so good it gets a lil dried blood but its easy to clean,,,so chyea

-- Contributed by: layna

I got one April of 07. I love mine. I hurt real bad though. i have tattoos and would rather have more of them then get another industrial.

-- Contributed by: Mrs. K

I am 14 and I got my industrial about 2 months ago. I did not feel a thing. I didnt bleed at all and I had no problems afterwords, except it got infected once because I kept touching and playing with it, but once I stopped messing with it, it was perfectly fine. Now I can change the earring all I want, I even put tongue rings in it. Lol. So it all depends on either how much pain you can handle or how the piercer does it.

-- Contributed by: Melissa

i got it done. it hurt when i did it but the pain lasted just a few seconds. for the first few days it was painful and i couldnt sleep on it but after a few days it stopped hurting. now its been about three weeks and it only hurts a little when someone touches it. i clean it twice a day and it hasnt gotten infected. it bleeds a little bit when someone hits it hard or something but it hasnt in a while.

-- Contributed by: kf

the industrial is awesome! im 13, turning 14 soon and i really need to convince my mom to let me get it. any tips?

-- Contributed by: rina

I got mine done yesterday. The pain was horrific, but it feels a lot better this morning. It bled A LOT! My neck, shirt, hair, everything was covered in blood. I think it looks great though. It's nice and clean now and I'm not too worried about horrible things happening. As long as you keep is clean and don't touch it more than necessary, I'm sure all will be well.

ive loved the industrial and im 14 n im trying to convince my mom to let me get it done and i know its going to hurt and everything ive been studying about it for 2 months now so how do i get her to say yes to it .

I want to get an Industrial piercing but I need to know more info. I don't have cartilage pierced is that ok? How much does it cost? Pain? and how long? How old do you have to be? and could I bring my 22 year old sister instead of my mom? thanks...

-- Contributed by: Elizabeth

Im getting my industrial in a few days and I wanted to know if I could still get an industrial if I already have a cartilage piercing. Also I have a high tolerance for pain so I was wondering if it will hurt as much as everyone says it does. How easy does it get infected?

Please email me back!!!

Okay so i'm getting an industrial this weekend, but I've only ever had my ears pierced. & I did one of my doubles myself. I have a bit of a high pain tolerence so I'm not toooooo worried about the pain. But I'm scared because I haven't pierced my cartiladge before. Is an Industrial okay for a first cartiladge piercing? I've been waiting for a really long time to get one. How do I clean it and how much care does it take? Can you ever take it out once you get it done & if you do does it heal with scarring?

Thanks! email me back?

I MEAN DA PAIN IS TEMPORARY BUT THE PIERCIN CAN LAST A LIFE TIME PLUS ITS HELLA COOL!!!

I got my Industrial piercing yesterday. I wanted to know what the typical gauge size was?

-- Contributed by: Blair

okay so i jsut got mine done but it swollen like mad, im not even sure wat to do i clean it like 3-4 times a day once in the morning and at night, and 2-3 times in between but its swollen and crusty, do i move it, or jsut leave it and let it heal continuing to clean it?

-- Contributed by: lyndsey

Industrial..not bad but is painful i have my right and left side done..2 me like ne other percing on healing part wise aslong u keep clean ..compared 2 my tongue and belly ..the industrial is little more pain but defintly worth it...sea salt have not used on ne percing not takin the chance ill stick to A&D and dial soap...hear so much on salt..not worth the chance stick to wht i use...might work for some others not..dnt kno but ill b on the safe side ..and not use it (*sea salt*-or-*salt*)

-- Contributed by: amanda

I got my industrial pierced almost 6 weeks ago. I used neosporin and backtine on it a few times a day. I'd clean the crusties away with the bactine, than put the neosporin on it to make sure the bar could move smoothly. Although people say that isn't what should be used on a new piercing, my industrial isn't sore, nor does it continue to have the crusties.

-- Contributed by: DS

I got an industrial piercing about two months ago. If you're wondering about how else to clean it, there is a professional soap for piercings that works really well. i use Therapeutic Skin Cleanser, it's an antimicrobial by Satin. Stay away from peroxide, alcohol, anything like that because it kills cells-old AND new. i've heard some people just use dial soap and that worx fine too. sea salt is really important just because little bumps will show up next to the piercing site and ... happens. make sure that it isn't iodized, and table salt will NOT work. the thing is, you need to rinse the area with fresh water afterwards, or you'll have the problem the person described. i've heard some really awful stories about infections spreading to the bone, and that's why i've tried to learn more about taking care of this piercing. so: wash twice a day and use a non-iodized sea salt and water solution to clean about 2-6 times a day. DON'T BE STUPID.

-- Contributed by: Samantha

i REPEAT .. DONT ever use salt and water.. it will cause the piercing to blister .. and result in a salt bubble round the hole.. as the water tends to eveaporate leaving behind teh salt in yoiur skin.. beleuive me . i cleaned my tragus with it :OI.. its healed now. butt :O. its took ages before ad was soo delicate and had a huge cyst

-- Contributed by: Dani

hey... im 16 too and and i have two cartlidge piercings and it has taken then awhile to heal like 3 months..... i wanted an industrial piercing but was a little afraid of the pain factor. is there a way that the pain can be minimized and how badly does it swell...

-- Contributed by: DEE

To Amilia and others- do NOT,I repeat,do NOT use alchol! It will only increase the risk of infection.Slightly warm up some water and dab it on using a cotton ball-it's best to desolve Sea Salt into the water. Scabs might occur, but do not pick them-they heal the piercing. Have fun,it's a great piercing to have ;).

-- Contributed by: Pierce_Addict

I've had my industrial for about 8 months now and I still love it. It's a long healing process, but if your careful to keep it clean and not pick at it, it can be a really fun piercing.

-- Contributed by: niesaJ

how long does it take for them to pierce you if you get industrial?? can they numb it??

sup im 16 and got my industrial in the cartilage of my ear 2wks ago and i wanted to know the best ways to keep it clean but not to dry. the cleaning spray that came with it burned the skin off my ear so i use alcohal n antibiotic cream...
