Jennifer, keep an eye on it. If there is redness, swelling, pain or pus- seek medical attention. Otherwise, continue to allow your tat to heal and continue caring for it. Good luck!

I just got a foot tattoo from a reputable parlor on Friday. It's Tuesday, and as the tattoo is starting to heal (with some scabbing in the darker areas) I'm noticing a sort of... metallic smell? I wash it and keep it clean, away from rubbing and moisturize it gently about four times a day. It is still a bit sore from it being a bit swollen... but I'm now concerned that this odor I smell is a bad infection? Help!

I got my tatt 2 days ago and a part of my flower looks like its bleached out and it got larger in the next day.. it was small at first but then it got larger does any one know what it is? My healing feels like normal tho.. can any one tell me what's wrong and how I can heal??

Julie, Same thing happened to me years ago. It comes and goes in a flareup on occassion. It's most likely an allergy to the ink. Try Benadryl when it flares. Hopefully over the years it will subside.

i got a tattoo on my lower back about 6 years ago. it is black ink with very little purple and outlined with yellow. i didnt have any problems healing but within the last couple years my tat becomes raised and very itchy every few months. its like its welped. i dont know how else to explain it. raised and very itchy~anyone ever heard of this???

Bee, He could have either an infection or an allergic reaction. I'm sure it's not SERIOUS per se, but he should have it checked out ASAP to make sure it is healing properly. Go to the original shop or a doctor for an accurate diagnosis or feedback. Hope this helps.

My fiance just recently got a tattoo on March 24, 2009. He has several deep parts in the skin and the colored areas are really puffy, do you think that he can have a serious infection?, and if so will he be OK.

How about an antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin? I would speak to the doctor's nurse for more care suggestions, since you are under his/her care...Good luck?

I got a tattoo Jan 24th 2009. It is red around my tattoo on my ankle. It is swollen and the areas where it is shaded are raised and filled w/ puss. The areas that are puffy he used a black ink close to the red ink. I went to the doctor Jan 30th and he gave me Amox Tr-k clv. The swelling has went down. Is there any special onitment I should use? I have been using Curel fragrence free. Do you think I run the risk of having a disease??? Thanks Jad

At first they hurt but now they are itching really bad. there is only a few red dots actually on the tattoo itself most are right on my muscle. I dont know what to do but its only getting worse.

Tina, you're welcome! Defintaly sounds like an allergy, but it's something you'll want to treat topically to help heal and prevent future irritation. Some people have short lived allergies with tats that go away over time. Good luck!

thanks jodie,i will go and see the doctor tomorrow morning,as it is still itchy 2 weeks later

-- Contributed by: Tina

Tina, try some hydrocortizone and possibly Benadryl for the allergy. I would recommend you seek professional treatment ASAP.

Rebecca, Please advise your father to visit the doctor! Sounds like an infecton or allergic reaction. It needs to be seen for proper diagnosis. Best wishes.

my dad got a home job tattoo done a few months ago and now all the colour red is just a huge lump all round the rest of the tattoo and its dry, also he got a big hard clump of puss out of it which is still pussing! its gross. plz help!

Often the red bumps mean a cadmium allergic reaction is taking place. Cadmium is used in red and blue ink. Over time, it may go away. For now, seek medical advice to be sure. Sadly, many people aren't aware of ink allergies until it is too late. Hopefully your discomfort will be relieved soon. Please seek help.

NEXT TIME YOU DECIDE TO GET A TATTOO THINK TWISE WELL I THINK THAT BEFORE YOU GET A TATTOO YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE CONCECUESES,BECAUSE IT COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS THING....SO I RECOMEND THAT YOU GO IN TO THE DOCOT TO HAVE A LOOK OR JUST GO BACK TO WHERE YOU GOT YOUR TATTOO DONE AN ASK THEM IF EVERYTHING IS OK AND IF THIS IS NORMAL TO HAV E THIS RED BUMPS...AND HAVE THE PAIN...

I got a tattooed on my chest 6 days ago and it is still very painful and there are little red bumps that look a lot like little pimples all around the outside of the tattoos. There are no bumps pn the tattoos but all around it. I just got a half-sleeve done 3 days ago. It's been healing really well so far. It just started getting itchy today, which is normal, but I've also noticed that it's starting to smell pretty bad. It's just started up today and the closest thing I can attribute the smell to is feet. Is this a normal part of the healing process? I'm thinking that it smells because the skin is peeling today, so maybe the dead skin has an odor to it...any feedback would help greatly. The bf thinks I'm being paranoid, but I'm worried now that I'm reading about all these staph infections and whatnot. lol

Hi. I got a new tattoo on my forearm two days ago and it doesn't appear to be healing well. My arm is a little swollen and the tattoo itself feels rough in areas. The tattoo artist wrapped it in plastic wrap afterward and I have recently read that that is not recommended. My aftercare habits have been perfect. I don't feel great, but can't say whether it's related to the tattoo which is why I'm asking if you think I may have an infection related to the tattoo/plastic wrap applied by the artist. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I got a tattoo on 03-29-08. It still appears to be slightly swollen on part of it and red, with a thin white film over it(parts of it looks like it should, black). Is this still in the healing process or should i go see a doctor for an infection. I just may be paranoid, not sure!! My husbands got one on the same day, and his seems to look like its healed(maybe he just heals faster)?

i got a tattoo last week and my body is constantly itching and red too. is it normal for me to break out like that.

-- Contributed by: Beba

Help! I got a butterfly with purple and pink ink. Its defintly not my first tat but its burning itching and constantly pusing up. A lot of the skin has fallen off. And the surrounding area is purple and swollen. My tat artis told me to use unsecented lotion and unscrented soap. But I did and I think it made it worse so I'm using antibotic now. And its very runny with pus. This will be my 6th day with the tattoo is this normal or am I have an allergic reaction or an infection??

i just got a tattoo 2 days ago and im so scared of getting an infection. I've been cleaning the area gently 3 times a day and been using an ointment on it and just started putting lotion on it. it's still a little red, but it doesnt hurt, so i think im just being nurvous, but how would it be before an infection would appear?

After 30 plus years of getting tatts I got one infected. My dog scratched it while playing and now I have a rather nasty looking area. The Dr. put me on antibotics and said let them work without missing a pill. Word to the wise...keep your tatts safe until healed.

Almost a week ago I got a tattoo.. It was doing fine then on the 4th day i started to get a bumb or two around my tattoo within the next couple of days it spread and started forming white heads.. I have went to the doctor and they are treating me for staff infection i just don't think it could be anywhere near that because im not sick at all just that the bumbs really hurt and are very sensitive.. some seem to be healing but the ones that rubbed against my jeans look infected.. could this be staff from a tattoo? The guy who did it gave my mom 2 and she was fine my dad has one from him and he's okay..

I got some redness and rashes on the surface of my tattoo after ten days it was done. It is itchy, the rashes is small in size and contain fluid in it. I went to see doctor, and he prescribed me aintibiotic. I had it for 24 days and it did show sign of improvement but couldn't get rid of it completely. Will it be allergy instead of infection?

i got a tribal half sleeve on my arm about 3days ago n now its really dried up and feels like if i move its gona crack. a thick crust has formed on the tattoo and i have alot of swelling aroung my elbow n forearm. did i get a reaction or is it infected?

-- Contributed by: eddie

My tattoo was healing fine for the first few days (about a week) after I got it - the normal redness, swelling, etc. Then I scratched it by accident and a really ugly red rash started forming. At first it was just on the area around the tattoo, but now it's covering quite a large part of my leg and seems to be spreading. I'll be going to the doctor soon, but I'm still curious if anyone out there has experienced/seen anything like this before?

I recently got my second tattoo. My first being on my upper back (shoulder) and was a breeze to heal and take care of. This time I got one on the top of my foot. I have asked many people how to care for it as well as did my own research, but one thing concerns me:

what do I do about returning to work Monday?

I got my tat yesterday (Friday) and HAVE to go back to work Monday. I work in a office environment so proper foot wear is required. What do you recommend I do in means of care for my foot while at work? Should I wrap it and then pantyhose/sock it?

Thanks for your help ahead of time-I appreciate it!  :-)

I just had a tattoo done on my foot on saturday. Today it has been five days and the tattoo is still really red and irritated. I went to the doctor after reasearching more about my symptoms and was put on antibiotics.I now know the foot is the most common place to get infected after tattooed. I just thought I would let you know if this happens to you see a doctor immediatly because it can lead to a very serious and infection.

My son has a tattoo on his leg with red ink around the perimeter in flame pattern, at the tip of each flame he has develope a deep hole, the width of each one is about the size of a BB, the edges are well formed. Also if the tattoo is exposed to the sun he has swelling and peeling of the tattoo, the tattoo was not done at a businees, just a neighboor who said he knew how do do it for cheap...I want him to see a doctor about the problem but would like to have any info on this I can first. has anyone else seen or heard of a problem like this?

If you have any type of rash around your tattoo, or is still quite swollen after the first 2 weeks you need to see a Doctor or at a minimum go back to your tattoo artist, ifthe artist is a professional TRAINED artist he or she will be able to tell you if the Tattoo is healing well. I have been tattooing for 18 years and I am always happy to look at a tattoo I have done for one of my clients and answer questions.
