Alisha and Tara, Tara provided some great tips to reduce swelling. In addition an antibiotic may be needed as well. I also recommend visting your doctor if your condition seems to worsen or not slowly improve. Good luck and happy healing!
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalakand Alisha if all else fails after weeks of swelling, a trip to the doctor worked for me =]
-- Contributed by: TaraI just wanted to let you know I have decided to keep my piercing even after all the trouble. It has now been 9 wks and with the help of Levaquin (an antibiotic) and prescription cream for my lip the swelling and white ring on the outside is almost gone. I still have 5days left of the treatments but I'm very happy to report things are looking very well for my lip piercing. Thanks for the advise.
I'd say to you Alisha the best way to keep swelling down is taking Ibuprofen (make sure it's not tylenol) Ibuprofen is an NSAID which means nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Tylenol is not. Also eat cold things or maybe some ice.
-- Contributed by: Tarawhat are the best ways to reduce swelling?
-- Contributed by: AlishaTara, it definatly sounds infected. I would remove the piece personally. After 8 weeks, sounds like your body is rejecting it or could be reacting to a metal allergy. At this point, it does not sound like it will heal without removal. Good luck.
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalakoops...I meant white skin around my piercing...
-- Contributed by: TaraI've had my lip pierced for about 8wks now. It is still swollen and infected. It's not as swollen as it was 3weeks ago but you can deffinatly tell when looking at me. I also have skin surounding my piercing on the outside. Any suggestions?
-- Contributed by: TaraI would keep the area clean and away from bacteria as long as possible. I can imagine you can kiss when it feels comfortable, as well as everything else. Justmake hygenie a priority!
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalakwhen will you be able to smoke, kiss, oral sex/ etc?
-- Contributed by: trezThanks for sharing the info. Kuku!
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalakabbie: They piece by clamping your lip in the right position and popping the needle in. The jewellery then goes into the end of the needle or the needle sleeve and is pushed through. It is likely if you take it out you will be left with a mark on your lip - especially if you keep it for a year or more.
Ashlee and Sam - all lip piercings are just known as lip piercings. The names like snakebites etc are made up by people and if you go into a piercer's and ask for a double lip piercing and point they'll get you :P
Desiree - Yes it is normal for it to be swollen as lip piercings take 3 months to heal and at least two weeks for the swelling to go down. To help it try using ice - especially chamomile tea made into ice cubes and taking anti-inflammatorys like ibuprofen!
If you guys need anymore help I have a site and forum at titaniumsenthralled.co.nr
-- Contributed by: Ku Kuwhat're viperbites?
-- Contributed by: samis it normal for it to still be red and swollen after a week?? im scared its infected.
-- Contributed by: desireewhat its it called when two rings are on each side of lip, like two snake bites?
-- Contributed by: ashleeI wanted a new piercing && didnt really know what I wanted & thought the labret looked cute. But then I saw the vertical labret and I am considering getting it done. But Im worried about what if I have to take it out & end up w. a nasty scar on my lip? & I was also wondering how do they actually peirce it?
-- Contributed by: abbieah i love my piercings i have to on the left side of my lip and one on the right side
I got the one on the right done very recently seems to be pussing a little bit the guy gave me a really small bar so when it was swollen i was in pain but i had to withstand it for a few days until i could buy a longer one to suit the swelling. but now the swelling is going done nice and quick and is starting to lose the red soreness around it
-- Contributed by: JovenJoe: Avoid kissing for two weeks at least :D
Tay: Nothing went wrong except you didn't pierce yourself at the right gauge? Let it heal over and see a professional - if you leave a bar in that is too small it will slice through your lip like cheesewire.

-- Contributed by: tayHey, I have a quick question: It says to avoid kissing, does this count for 4-6 weeks or for how long would this approx. be? Great, i loved it i'm not sure if i want to get 2 studs below my lip or just one ring lip piercing on the left-hand side, which one would be safer? greez Joe
-- Contributed by: JoeMore great tips from our expert, Kuku. Thanks for contirbuting your knowledge and expertise.
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakThanks for the resident piercer tips! :)
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakAnother really great piercing article :D Two notes from your 'resident piercer' as it seems i am becoming XD
Firstly: If placed incorrectly or if the rings are the wrong size they will rub on the lips, gums and teeth, in fact they can be just as damaging as labrets and come into contact with the the teeth and gums as much as they do! Labrets are better initial jewellery as it encourages the body to create a fistula (piercing hole) in a straight line rather than in a curve -which means labrets will lay flat, if you heal with a ring and wear a labret often they don't lay right or aren't comfortable due to the shape of the fistula. Labrets are also easier to clean - but you are right they really need to be the right size other wise you could embed the jewellery in your mouth!
Secondly using saline on a cotton bud isn't the best way to clean the outside of a piercing, soaking the piercing in the saline in a cup or using a cotton compress is, as the hot water (saline needs to be as hot as you can stand it) opens the capillaries which healing and pulls out anything trapped in the piercing. After soaking for 5mins or so THEN use a cotton bud to pull away anything that's been pulled out of the piercing.
If anyone would like any more detailed piercing aftercare (and the whys and wherefores behind the instructions) or needs any advice please feel free to visit my site at titaniumsenthralled .co .nr and pester as much as you like!
-- Contributed by: Ku KuVicki, Hope everything heals soon for you. Thanks for contributing the tidbit on snake vs. venom piercings!
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalaki got my lip pierced 6 days ago, i've been taking good care of it, but its sore, and fyi that are arguing, snakebites are bottom lip rings one on left and one and right, venombites are lip rings close to each other on bottom, and spiderbites are even closer than venombites, but i love my piercing!
-- Contributed by: VickiI've heard they hurt more than the nose. Either way, it should be a quick procedure. Make sure you take extra care of both piercings as they heal. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalakhey. I'm 25. I have a good guy friend who just did my nose last night with a real ear piercer. He gave me the solution for it to keep it clean. It hurts a little but thats normal. today he is piercing my lip/labret and he has no experience. except doing his own hiself. Does lip piercings hurt less or more than a nose piercing?
-- Contributed by: BethAlyssa, keep your ee on it, if the area becomes tender, swollen or oozes, please seek medical care. In the future, always visit a professional who should use proper procedures and sanitized equipment. Best wishes.

-- Contributed by: Misty KaramI am nearly 15 and pierced my own lip 2 days ago- it swelled up to 3 times its normal size and has still got a lump surrounding the area but the swelling has gone down. It looked like someona had ounched me in the face. I am wearing an earring in it at the moment but need to buy a thin perhaps 1mm ring or if i can find a labrette that size because i don't want their to be a visable hole on my face, and i want it to be able to be covered up with make-up. It swelled loads but wil be worth it and i didnt have to pay a thing, but i warn people to be careful as anything could have gone wrong with mine, so go and get it done by a specialist.

-- Contributed by: mikei am going to pierce my lip is there any nerves i should be worried about?
-- Contributed by: chrisI recently got my lip pierced, and I wanted the smallest gauge possible for the piercing. Itâs now been 12 days since my piercing and the surrounding area of where it was pierced is pinkish. There is no swelling or pain at all but still the appearance bothers me. Itâs not too noticeable since the piercing is really close to where my lip starts but still, Iâm concerned that thatâs not normal after 12 days of healing and Iâm worried that that pinkish area will develop into a scar. Based on your professional knowledge, is that normal and will that develop into a scar? (pinkish region)
Itâs definitely not infected.. with the way I clean it, Iâm not giving it the slightest chance to get infected, but I was thinking of changing the jewelry since maybe is my bodies reaction to the type of metal.. would silver be alright instead?
-- Contributed by: Jeni just pierced my lips 3days ago, today its turning a slight purple around the back and front of the ring. my friends say its a bruise, others say its affected. what do you think?

-- Contributed by: CharlesI use bactine, sprayed on a q-tip to clean the outside, around the stud. I then put a few drops of gly-oxide on the inside, under the "disk" and on it. Leave it on for a few seconds to a minute and then rinse with clean water. After every meal (drinking anything other than water, smoking etc.) i rinse my mouth with 50/50 listerine and water (i take it with me in a plastic bottle when I go out). No wet kissing, oral sex etc. for 4-8 weeks to keep clear of foreign bacteria.

-- Contributed by: ...snakebites are 2 lip piercings in the lower lip. one on the left side and one on the right. spiderbites are 2 right next to each other.
