Kana, sounds painful! Salt water wll help flush impurities, but you really should continue the care your piercer recommendended for best results. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalaki have been using just regular table salt is that ok
-- Contributed by: kanaAshley, I would recommend speaking with your piercer, although some swelling is common, your sounds extreme, you may be having a reaction to the jewelry or have an infection. Seek medical advice. Best wishes.
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakHer EveryOne Lol. Ok so i got the Monroe piercing on Wed. and My Lip started Swellin he next Day and i wanna know is That Normal and its Really swollen! so bad to the point where my eaing is being sucked in! How long til the swelling goes down? HELP
-- Contributed by: AshleyMika, this is an excellent question. I am not aware of any nerves, but I could be incorrect. I would ask your piercer for a more definitive answer. Everyone will respond differently to a piercing, so it's important that you're doing your homework and investigating placement ideas. Best wishes!
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakI'm wondering if there are any facial nerves that can be affected with a monroe piercing...?
-- Contributed by: MikaHaley, first I think it is pertinent you address your eating disorder and seek help ASAP. Bulimia is a VERY serious eating disorder. There is plenty of resources available that are willing to help you through this difficult healing process. Second, this is a very interesting question, one that I am not familiar with answering. I would imagine excess bile and bacteria including acids could irritate the piercing, especially burn or sting the placement area. I would address the whole body before taking this next step. Good luck and best wishes on your road to recovery!
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakHey. So i really want to get my monroe peirced, but im bulimic. So, if i were to throw-up, or whatever during the "healing process" would it get infected?
-- Contributed by: HaleyEmily, this has many variables, including your skin's healing process and the size of the jewelry put in. Generally, the smaller the piece, the smaller the scar. I would talk to a professional piercer for their expert advice. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalakheey, i was just curious, i'm thinkin about angel bites, if i deicided to take them out how big would the scar be?
-- Contributed by: Emily.Jessica, glad to hear you found the process bearable and were able to share your experience with our readers! Continue taking care of your piercing! Good luck.
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalaki just got my monroe done today and honestly, it's literally just a pinch. just breathe calmly and it's over in like 1 min.
-- Contributed by: jessicaSadie, pain varies with this piercing. Many find it bearable, and keep in mind, piercing is quick! :) Good luck.
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalakdoes it hurt?
-- Contributed by: sadiebethamySam, play this by ear. It may not work with your facial structure and placement. I would advise removing if it continues. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakI got a monroe piercing a week ago and it catches on everything, my teeth, gums and food. Last night it caught on my teeth and pulled through my lip into my moth (stud and all)it didn't hurt... I barely noticed it, this is the first time it's happened, it usually stops. I pushed it back through but it seems to fit through so easily and now I am panicking because I don't want a larger stud. What do I do?
-- Contributed by: SamI got my Monroe piercing today and I am very impressed I am a fast healer and I keep everything very clean I have only seen slight swelling I don't know if it will go up in a few days but it is pretty amazing and I have had no pain or discomfort so far so I am excited to see if it stays this way =) I would highly recommend this piercing to anyone I love it!
-- Contributed by: AmyLily, Great news. Sorry to hear about the mix-up. I would contact the original studio about a re-pierce (in two weeks) or a refund. Very uncool!
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakOK SO I WENT TO A DIFFERENT SHOP AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE THAT THEY PUT THE WRONG TYPE OF RING..THE ONE I GOT WAS WAY TOO THICK AND WITH A SHORT BAR..SO I HAD TO TAKE IT OFF AND LET IT HEAD FOR 2 WEEKS BEFORE I GET IT RE-DONE..IM SOOO SAD BUT I'LL GET IT DONE ASAP! THANK YOU JODIE MICHALAK FOR YOUR SUGGESTION... HIGHLY APPRECIATED
-- Contributed by: LiLYi just got my monroe done yesterday and im really happy with it ...althogh the swelling has cased me a little discomfort but other then that its fine.. i highly recomened anyone thinking of getting it done; done.
-- Contributed by: AmberLily, Please contact the piercer ASAP- sounds like it could be infected, if not infected, it still shouldn't feel like this. Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakCAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME WiTH THIS LITTLE ISSUE??I GOT MY MONROE YESTERDAY AND TODAY IT'S A LITTLE SWELLED BUT NOT ALOT.. WHAT IM WORRIED ABOUT IS THAT I THINK THE BAR IN THIS RING IT'S TOO SHORT BECAUSE I FEEL IT REALLY TIGHT EVEN THOUGH THE BALL AT THE END IS PRETTY BIG SO THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY THAT IT CAN GO IN MY SKIN, BUT IT IS VERY UNCONFORTABLE SO SHOULD I GO BACK AND CHANGE INTO A LONGER ONE OR LEAVE IT LIKE IT IS? WHEN YOU FIRST GET IT PIERCED SHOULD THE RING BE ABLE TO BE MOVED AROUND OR STAY IN PLACE??
-- Contributed by: -LiLYi think monroe piercing looks good:) i relly want to get 1 for my 15 b-day does it hurt?
-- Contributed by: michelleMy monroe was done two days ago and I looks as though someone just punched me only on one side of my lip. It is odd because I have TONS Of piercings and I have never experienced such swelling with a piercing before. I will just be sure to clean it often, not touch it, and be patient. I do love it though.
-- Contributed by: CrystalI just got my monroe 2 days ago. She told me to use listerine but also said no alcohol isn't that contradicting? Also the piercing feels slanted and is hitting the middle of my teeth. She said its because the stem is longer for swelling but after talking with several people having them and feeling what I feel in my own mouth I am worried that if I let it heal this way I will have to get it redone. Can someone help me figure this out.
-- Contributed by: butrflizFoster, sounds very cool. I love subtle piercings. Glad healing is going well.
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakI got mine done three days ago, and there has not been very much swelling. It has swollen enough that people can notice it. I love the piercing. It's not all "BAM!" out there. It's very subtle.
-- Contributed by: ...FosterCI got mine done on saturday and its wednesday and I feel the swelling isn't going down and like the back inside is being pulled through the inside of my lip or like the stud is too small.
-- Contributed by: I love mine but...i got mines done two weeks ago and i love it . this site helped alot.
-- Contributed by: blossomI noticed it mentioned listerine... Do not EVER use listerine. You can't use anything with alchohol, you're actually supposed to use bitotin...
-- Contributed by: TaraCecilia, Please go see a physician right away~~Good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalakwell i got my monroe piercing a while ago and it doesnt hurt me or bother me but im just concerned because i was checking it out last time and its red from the inside and has like a big scar color red and i dont know if its infected im scared
-- Contributed by: CECILIAIts me again the sport i play is only about two hours is that all right
-- Contributed by: TashaMany piercings heal pretty quickly after removal. I wouldn't recommend leaving it out for more than a few days at a time. Hope that helps!
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakHi i got my monroe done I play sports and when its healed can i take it out to play sports and put it back in
-- Contributed by: TashaI got my piercing a week and 2 days ago I must say that I am kind of worried. It looks like the piercing is going to fall in my face!!! Around the ball looks puffy will this go down soon! Looks like there will be a scar . What can I do ?
-- Contributed by: KirstenGood luck with the job search. I would certainly find out the dress code prior to applying and always clear it with your potential employer prior to hire to avoid problems later.
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakI got my monroe piercing a week ago. I love it!!! Only problem is, where do i get a job with this?? But other than that i love it to death. and it didnt even hurt!!!
-- Contributed by: KatherynKuku, You'e sharing great information with our readers. Thanks so much!
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakAs a body piercer I have a few tips to improve this article if you don't mind :)
Firstly an 18 gauge should NOT be used in a monroe piercing as it is far too thin. A bar that is too thin will slice through flesh in the same way as a cheese wire goes through cheese, it can cause the piercing hole to widen or can tear through the skin creating unslightly rips. usually a 16 gauge is used but 14 is also common.
Secondly a piercer should never mark with a permenant marker as the ink could cause an allergic reaction or cause problems when it is left inside the piercing hole (An open wound). A piercer should use a medical grade water based marker - the same thing a doctor would use to mark you for surgery. The fact that it is water based means your body can absorb and assimilate the ink harmlessly instead of it lingering inside the piercing causing problems. As it is medical grade the ink is also suitable for sensitive skins.
To do with mouthwash: It is not medical strength it is diluted (50/50 with water) non-alcoholic mouthwash. At the piercer's it maybe antibacterial / antiseptic but at home for the rest of the piercing aftercare you should try to avoid antibacterial mouthwash as it will strip the piercing of all the good bacteria helping it to heal and the chemicals will burn the fistula (piercing hole) irritating it and prolonging healing time, alcohol based mouthwash has a similar effect too. To be honest it is just best to rinse your mouth with the salt water solution as it is much kinder to the piercing! Listerine is alcohol based and far, far too strong for piercings.
Brushing your teeth multiple times a day is likely to irritate the piercing more than anything else as the chemicals in toothpaste aren't very piercing friendly either, getting a nice new toothbrush is essential as they harbour lots of bacteria and if yours is a bit old it can cause problems. Natural toothpastes are worth giving a go during your healing time - they actually taste quite nice too and wont sting or bother your piercing quite so much!
With oral piercings rinsing your mouth after eating, smoking and drinking sugary or alcoholic drinks is essential to clear the piercing of debris and anything potentially harmful. Ideally you should refrain from kissing (and other forms of intimacy), drinking alcohol and smoking for at least two weeks.
Monroe healing time is not 3-6 weeks. It is actually 3-4 months as only half the piercing is inside the mouth (fastest healing area of the body) and so doesn't heal as quickly as piercing entirely within the mouth such as tongue piercings.
I hope this helps you improve your article. If anyone reading this would like a fully detailed (explaining how and why your piercing heals / needs to be cleaned the way it does) aftercare sheet or just some general piercing advice feel free to visit my site at: titaniumsenthralled .co .nr and poke me as much as you like!
Hope this helps people out! Ku xxx

-- Contributed by: TASHALaShawn, thanks for sharing the after care tips!
-- Contributed by: Jodie MichalakRe:Miranduhh Clean your face twice in a day with an anti-bacterial soap and luke warm water. Facial steaming and hot water will help in loosing the crust below your jewelry and in softening your skin. Use disposable products like tissue paper, swab or cotton-ball to gently remove the crust from your jewelry. Before touching your jewelry or even during shower it is advisable to wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap.
-- Contributed by: LaShawni just got my monroe pierced about a week ago :). i love it!! but im sorta getting worried about it :/ i searched on the internet for signs of infection and like it said i either have the begining signs of infection orr im just over cleaning it :(. soo im really confused...can anybody help mehh? - my symptoms are dryness around the hole, redness/irritation and a whitish discharge that forms a crust like ring around my labret (eww right? lol)....sooo can anybody help me? and umm plz dont write back "then take it out" b/c im not going to :/.
-- Contributed by: miranduhh :)I just got a monroe piercing today after researching it all morning on this site and other. I love it. My boyfriend who is in kuwait thinks its sexy so thats all the feedback I needed. I would just say research before the actually act. Go to the company and ask questions until your comfortable.
-- Contributed by: LaShawnMany people find Monroe piercings sexual as they elude a sense of mystery. I would imagine in a sexual sense, there is no increased pleasure. Thanks for your question.
-- Contributed by: Jodie Michalakare manroe piercings sexual? Why? I heard they were.
-- Contributed by: Audrinnnaaadoes the monroe piercing hurt? and normaly how long does it take to heal and there be no pain if there is any at all??

-- Contributed by: Jessicai luv my monroe piercin i think its lady like ;)
-- Contributed by: sunshineI got a monroe done this past saturday. it hurt less than my tongue piercing. i like it a lot.
-- Contributed by: rayrayI got my Monroe two days ago. No major swelling but its still kind of tender and a little red around the piercing. It was painful initially but not unbarable. I have been using the H2Ocean Sea Salt spray and seems to clean the area well. I have also been using a mouth wash after meals and smoking. Today I started using Neosporin Spay to see if that helps fight off any infection that might be forming. Also, I took Advil for the first two days to help reduce the swelling, which I think might be why I didn't really swell up much at all. If there's anyone out there that might have some tips on aftercare, please share them. Thanks!
-- Contributed by: D. MonroeI hella want a Monroe Piercing and I had my mom convinced until my step dad said no because he wants me to be a young lady not a dart board. I feel like if its my body I will get it legally or illegally. My grandma even thinks it would be cute. I truly don't understand why he should have any input anyways he's only my step dad and I've always secretly hated him so I'm gonna get the piercing just to rub it in his stupid fat face.

-- Contributed by: saraI got mine done about 3 wks ago and it looks really good. It didn't hurt at all and It didn't even swell that much. I had a really good piercer. Im ready to change to a smaller stud though because I keep hitting it on my teeth. This is a piercing that can be really sexy if done right!!!
-- Contributed by: girle83I got my monroe peorcing 2 nights ago. I was so scared! It was a little painful b/c the piercer lost the gauge and he had to shove thru a new one. But then my school made me take it out a day laster and an hour later i just shoved it thru again!
-- Contributed by: Sammyi just got my monroe pierced last night on the rigth side (so technically its a madonna?) but whatever the correct name is i love it! it did hurt getting it done for a few moments and it made my eyes water but overall i would rate this piercing a 4 on the pain scale. anyone who is considering it should definitely follow through! i just have a normal bar in right now i cant wait to put diamonds and gold bars in!

I got mine done about 3 weeks ago and I LOVE it. It didn't hurt at all, and just about everyone thinks it's cute on me. I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking about it, because it's on the mouth it'll heal fast, and if you change your mind, you can take it out and it will close up quickly, and won't be noticeable at all.
-- Contributed by: SonjaI got mines about 3 months ago.....everything went good typical pain and swellness......I have a gold one its so cute I love it
-- Contributed by: DeedeeI just got my monroe piercing last night and i love it. It did not hurt at all but about 20 minutes later it satarted to swell and hurt i just keep using this sea salt spray from the piercer and it seems to work! I recommend this to anyone who is afraid of getting a facial piercing its a piece of cake!
-- Contributed by: SallyI got my monroe pierced one week ago..It didnt really hurt..but it hurt afterwards. I love it, but Ive done everything Im supposed to do but I think its infected. I constantly brush my teeth and use the mouthwash, and clean it with antibacterial soap..its still pretty red and it hurts alot now..what else am I supposed to do?!
-- Contributed by: Shannonhi, im curently thinking about a monroe, but my father is making me research it before i get it. i think they're hott!!! the cleaning process is more than i thought.... wish me luck
-- Contributed by: poohI'm going to try and answer some of the other questions I saw on here.
Don't worry about ball size most piercers will put a rather large bar and ball on to accomodate for swelling, and remember this is for your best intrest you would not want skin to grow around the small ball and then that would not be very pretty, but in 2 to 3 weeks depending on how fast you heal you can downsize to a smaller one!
As for the person who asked how high do they put it, it depends on your face and the way it would look on you or how you prefer it.
As for a good age that is up with your parents and your maturity level if you can handle a facial piercing and taking care of it, I would say from 14-on wouldn't be a bad age at all.
-- Contributed by: SammieTo Jacinda, Don't worry! All those symptoms are completely normal since you only got it about 4 or 5 days ago. A yellowish crust should form and be cleaned off properly with a Sea Salt rinse. And the swelling should be completely down in about two weeks. As for the redness that can stay for a while some discoloration can even stay for up to a few months. Just make sure you carefully clean it but don't over clean!! That can disrupt cell growth too.
I got my monroe a month ago Pain- Slight pinch over in a second Swelling- A little but not really noticible unless you were looking for it to be swollen Redness- Still a little red around the area but I have gone to see the piercer and she assured me its normal Crusties-Not that much but some
Happy Piercing folks =]
-- Contributed by: SammieI got a monroe 6 days ago. The piercing itself was fairly painless and the healing has been going well thus far =) I brush my teeth constantly as my normal routine and I rinse with antibacterial mouthwash 4-5 times a day. When it comes to cleaning the outside, I wash with antibacterial soap in the shower and afterwords clean around the piercing with a q-tip and contact lense solution...good luck to anyone who decides to go with this piercing. I love mine =)
-- Contributed by: whitneyI got mine pierced in Feb 2008 but i did it myself. I did a good job too cuz its not swollen or red anymore. It looks really good. I love it! The only problem I have is that I need to get a job soon and Im not sure if any place will let me keep it!!! :(
-- Contributed by: Cadez25I GOT MINE DONE ABOUT 4 OR 5 DAYS AGO. AND ITS RED, A LIL SWOLLEN AND CRUSTY. I THINK IT MIGHT BE INFECTED. BUT I BRUSH MY TEETH 5 TIMES A DAY AND I USE MOUTHWASH ALONG WITH CLEANIN THE OUTSIDE. I DONT KNOW WHY ITS LIKE THIS.
-- Contributed by: JACINDAi was wondering, what do you think is a good age for this piercing? i really want some opinions... what do you think of 14 years old? :/
-- Contributed by: LAURA!I got mine done and have been taking care of it. I think that a little redness and crusting is normal. It has to do this in order to heal. If you are really worried, amanda, I would go back and ask if it looks like it is healing nicely.
-- Contributed by: KristinaI plan on getting mine done and im only 15! and Im not scar3d of th3 pain im just scared that the size of the ball is to big for my face! =/ can i choose the size of it??
-- Contributed by: VICKEYhow high up is it placed?
-- Contributed by: rebecca-marywow. :P i will have to check if my school will let me get it done... really i don't care if i'm not supposed to have it. what are they going to do about it? rip it out?! what do you think is a good age for it? i turn 14 soon (going into gr 9) i think i can convince my mom. any good arguement suggestions?
-- Contributed by: rebecca-maryI had got mine pierced March 8th and I did have a little truble with it at first just because I have big lips so I had to get to longest bar they had and still that was small on me. The person that had done the piercing had to use pliers to hold on to the bar just to screw on my ball. I now have had it in for almost a month and it is just about heald and I'm now looking into geting a few more piercing.
-- Contributed by: AmandaI got my monroe pierced last thrusday, and it is now sunday night, and its fine and all likeits not sore or red,, but i dont think its healing well,, like itfeels like its ripping and it gets caught on my gums when i smile. And im afraid that the inside is gunna inbed and the skin heal over it.. what should i do??? Pleasee help!!!
-- Contributed by: Brittniwell i just got mine done today 3-13-08 it didnt hurt but it doesent feel good. i was told by the shop to put neosporin on it by the shop and well but people keep telling me that i shouldnt put it on so yeah and i go to a school that doesent allow facial piercings
-- Contributed by: sheaniaok.. i have a lot of questions. first, i have a birth mark (like a smaller monroe) on the right side of my lip. i'm wondering if a monroe would look right, i'm thinking it's too high on my lip for the piercing to go over top, (and even if i did get the piercing right through it, is that safe?) i think it would look better on the right side.. maybe i can get the doctor to remove that mark? i don't know what to do. also, does it even hurt a little bit? aah i really want to get it done.
-- Contributed by: Rebeccagot mine done last night, didnt swell up at all, different for everyone i guess. Doesn't hurt at all. I've really been takin care of it, I smoke so i really gotta take extra care of it. I love it!
-- Contributed by: SaraI got a monroe Friday and it didnt hurt at all. It didnt swell and turn red or anything. I doesnt hurt now or anything i rinse my mouth 3-4 times a day with peroxol and every now and then sea salt water and it is doing fine also i brush my teeth like 3 times a day. You shouldnt clean it too much b/c you do need some bacteria in your mouth. my husbands tongue almost got infected from cleaning it to much but we cought it in time! Dont be scared to ask questions... I mean it is your mouth!
-- Contributed by: Lanai got mine pierced one week ago today...! and ive been taking care about it...but its hard around it and its really red and crusty..is that bad?!!?!?!
-- Contributed by: amandaI had mine done tuesday and it is swollen. Mainly because my piercer let the needle fall out. then he had to put it back in and i think that's why it is so bad. pus is coming out and u can see the first hole that he tried to put it through the first time.
-- Contributed by: Taquariyeah, I got mine gone the day after christmas 2007 and mine looks really good and I really made sure I took care of it because my mom, being a nurse, said that if it even looks like it is not healing I would have to take it out, so I made sure i could keep it! I went back to the shop where I got it done and they changed it like 2 weeks later , only because I was taking good care of it! The pain level is very little and it heals fast!! I also have tragus, industial and my belly button done twice!! So Im know the pain scale pretty well!
Future "monroe"ers go for it, it is super cute!!
-- Contributed by: KaraBearaive been wanting one for about 2 months now, if by spring break my mind hasnt changed im going for it. my friends have had it done so its not the pain im worried about as much as my gums and teeth.

Don't use listerine - it contains alcohol - get alcohol free Oral B.. Alcohol - BAD.
-- Contributed by: heyI just got mine done on Sunday evening. While it doesn't really hurt or pinch like your typical piercing, there is a very strong burning sensation while the actual puncture is being made. The care is very easy, but it itches so bad during the healing process! Special care must be taken to avoid the oral jewelery for those first few meals after you receive your new piercing as well. Mine got stuck on my teeth numerous times... OUCH!
-- Contributed by: Pami have mine done and it is sooooo worth it. i have more piercings but this one is def. my favorite one ever. i reccomend it to everyone. <3
-- Contributed by: Meghan Bancrofti have mine doen and i clean it and rinse with listerine ALL THE time but its still red after a week. i hope thats normal..caus e i smoke a pack a day so i hope that isnt gettign me infected.
it wasnt painful and still isnt and i didnt sweel much so that was good.
<3333
oh yeah and when can i change out ym stud?
-- Contributed by: nataliedegreeI want to get mine soo bad. But my mom won't let me. I think if i keep asking her though, she will give in. It's not that big of a deal. I'm just scared i won't be able to get hired anywhere with one. Do you think that'll be a problem?
-- Contributed by: Josiei did mine myself with a pen i was very steraal i wash it 3 times a day with anti bacterial sope and i use listerine after each meal
