Mika, this is an excellent question. I am not aware of any nerves, but I could be incorrect. I would ask your piercer for a more definitive answer. Everyone will respond differently to a piercing, so it's important that you're doing your homework and investigating placement ideas. Best wishes!

Haley, first I think it is pertinent you address your eating disorder and seek help ASAP. Bulimia is a VERY serious eating disorder. There is plenty of resources available that are willing to help you through this difficult healing process. Second, this is a very interesting question, one that I am not familiar with answering. I would imagine excess bile and bacteria including acids could irritate the piercing, especially burn or sting the placement area. I would address the whole body before taking this next step. Emily, this has many variables, including your skin's healing process and the size of the jewelry put in. Generally, the smaller the piece, the smaller the scar. I would talk to a professional piercer for their expert advice. Good luck!

I got a monroe piercing a week ago and it catches on everything, my teeth, gums and food. Last night it caught on my teeth and pulled through my lip into my moth (stud and all)it didn't hurt... I barely noticed it, this is the first time it's happened, it usually stops. I pushed it back through but it seems to fit through so easily and now I am panicking because I don't want a larger stud. What do I do?

I got my Monroe piercing today and I am very impressed I am a fast healer and I keep everything very clean I have only seen slight swelling I don't know if it will go up in a few days but it is pretty amazing and I have had no pain or discomfort so far so I am excited to see if it stays this way =) I would highly recommend this piercing to anyone I love it!

My monroe was done two days ago and I looks as though someone just punched me only on one side of my lip. It is odd because I have TONS Of piercings and I have never experienced such swelling with a piercing before. I will just be sure to clean it often, not touch it, and be patient. I do love it though.

I just got my monroe 2 days ago. She told me to use listerine but also said no alcohol isn't that contradicting? Also the piercing feels slanted and is hitting the middle of my teeth. She said its because the stem is longer for swelling but after talking with several people having them and feeling what I feel in my own mouth I am worried that if I let it heal this way I will have to get it redone. Can someone help me figure this out.

I got mine done three days ago, and there has not been very much swelling. It has swollen enough that people can notice it. I love the piercing. It's not all "BAM!" out there. It's very subtle.

I got mine done on saturday and its wednesday and I feel the swelling isn't going down and like the back inside is being pulled through the inside of my lip or like the stud is too small.

Many piercings heal pretty quickly after removal. I wouldn't recommend leaving it out for more than a few days at a time. Hope that helps!

As a body piercer I have a few tips to improve this article if you don't mind :)

Firstly an 18 gauge should NOT be used in a monroe piercing as it is far too thin. A bar that is too thin will slice through flesh in the same way as a cheese wire goes through cheese, it can cause the piercing hole to widen or can tear through the skin creating unslightly rips. usually a 16 gauge is used but 14 is also common.

Secondly a piercer should never mark with a permenant marker as the ink could cause an allergic reaction or cause problems when it is left inside the piercing hole (An open wound). A piercer should use a medical grade water based marker - the same thing a doctor would use to mark you for surgery. The fact that it is water based means your body can absorb and assimilate the ink harmlessly instead of it lingering inside the piercing causing problems. As it is medical grade the ink is also suitable for sensitive skins.

To do with mouthwash: It is not medical strength it is diluted (50/50 with water) non-alcoholic mouthwash. At the piercer's it maybe antibacterial / antiseptic but at home for the rest of the piercing aftercare you should try to avoid antibacterial mouthwash as it will strip the piercing of all the good bacteria helping it to heal and the chemicals will burn the fistula (piercing hole) irritating it and prolonging healing time, alcohol based mouthwash has a similar effect too. To be honest it is just best to rinse your mouth with the salt water solution as it is much kinder to the piercing! Listerine is alcohol based and far, far too strong for piercings.

Brushing your teeth multiple times a day is likely to irritate the piercing more than anything else as the chemicals in toothpaste aren't very piercing friendly either, getting a nice new toothbrush is essential as they harbour lots of bacteria and if yours is a bit old it can cause problems. Natural toothpastes are worth giving a go during your healing time - they actually taste quite nice too and wont sting or bother your piercing quite so much!

With oral piercings rinsing your mouth after eating, smoking and drinking sugary or alcoholic drinks is essential to clear the piercing of debris and anything potentially harmful. Ideally you should refrain from kissing (and other forms of intimacy), drinking alcohol and smoking for at least two weeks.

Monroe healing time is not 3-6 weeks. It is actually 3-4 months as only half the piercing is inside the mouth (fastest healing area of the body) and so doesn't heal as quickly as piercing entirely within the mouth such as tongue piercings.

I got my monroe done like a 4 days ago its going well no redness really i have not had any discharge nor the dry crusty stuff around my lip. I clean it continously. you can never over clean an oral piercing. I was worried about infection when i first got it done and really still am but i know it not infected

Re:Miranduhh Clean your face twice in a day with an anti-bacterial soap and luke warm water. Facial steaming and hot water will help in loosing the crust below your jewelry and in softening your skin. Use disposable products like tissue paper, swab or cotton-ball to gently remove the crust from your jewelry. Before touching your jewelry or even during shower it is advisable to wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap.

I got my Monroe two days ago. No major swelling but its still kind of tender and a little red around the piercing. It was painful initially but not unbarable. I have been using the H2Ocean Sea Salt spray and seems to clean the area well. I have also been using a mouth wash after meals and smoking. Today I started using Neosporin Spay to see if that helps fight off any infection that might be forming. Also, I took Advil for the first two days to help reduce the swelling, which I think might be why I didn't really swell up much at all. If there's anyone out there that might have some tips on aftercare, please share them. Thanks!

I hella want a Monroe Piercing and I had my mom convinced until my step dad said no because he wants me to be a young lady not a dart board. I just got my monroe piercing last night and i love it. It did not hurt at all but about 20 minutes later it satarted to swell and hurt i just keep using this sea salt spray from the piercer and it seems to work! I'm going to try and answer some of the other questions I saw on here.

Don't worry about ball size most piercers will put a rather large bar and ball on to accomodate for swelling, and remember this is for your best intrest you would not want skin to grow around the small ball and then that would not be very pretty, but in 2 to 3 weeks depending on how fast you heal you can downsize to a smaller one!

As for the person who asked how high do they put it, it depends on your face and the way it would look on you or how you prefer it.

As for a good age that is up with your parents and your maturity level if you can handle a facial piercing and taking care of it, I would say from 14-on wouldn't be a bad age at all.

To Jacinda, Don't worry! All those symptoms are completely normal since you only got it about 4 or 5 days ago. A yellowish crust should form and be cleaned off properly with a Sea Salt rinse. And the swelling should be completely down in about two weeks. As for the redness that can stay for a while some discoloration can even stay for up to a few months. Just make sure you carefully clean it but don't over clean!! That can disrupt cell growth too.

I got a monroe 6 days ago. The piercing itself was fairly painless and the healing has been going well thus far =) I brush my teeth constantly as my normal routine and I rinse with antibacterial mouthwash 4-5 times a day. When it comes to cleaning the outside, I wash with antibacterial soap in the shower and afterwords clean around the piercing with a q-tip and contact lense solution...good luck to anyone who decides to go with this piercing. I got mine done and have been taking care of it. I think that a little redness and crusting is normal. It has to do this in order to heal. If you are really worried, amanda, I would go back and ask if it looks like it is healing nicely.

I had got mine pierced March 8th and I did have a little truble with it at first just because I have big lips so I had to get to longest bar they had and still that was small on me. The person that had done the piercing had to use pliers to hold on to the bar just to screw on my ball. I now have had it in for almost a month and it is just about heald and I'm now looking into geting a few more piercing.

ok.. i have a lot of questions. first, i have a birth mark (like a smaller monroe) on the right side of my lip. i'm wondering if a monroe would look right, i'm thinking it's too high on my lip for the piercing to go over top, (and even if i did get the piercing right through it, is that safe?) i think it would look better on the right side.. maybe i can get the doctor to remove that mark? i don't know what to do. also, does it even hurt a little bit? aah i really want to get it done.

I got a monroe Friday and it didnt hurt at all. It didnt swell and turn red or anything. I doesnt hurt now or anything i rinse my mouth 3-4 times a day with peroxol and every now and then sea salt water and it is doing fine also i brush my teeth like 3 times a day. You shouldnt clean it too much b/c you do need some bacteria in your mouth. my husbands tongue almost got infected from cleaning it to much but we cought it in time! Dont be scared to ask questions... I mean it is your mouth!

I had mine done tuesday and it is swollen. Mainly because my piercer let the needle fall out. then he had to put it back in and i think that's why it is so bad. pus is coming out and u can see the first hole that he tried to put it through the first time.

yeah, I got mine gone the day after christmas 2007 and mine looks really good and I really made sure I took care of it because my mom, being a nurse, said that if it even looks like it is not healing I would have to take it out, so I made sure i could keep it! I went back to the shop where I got it done and they changed it like 2 weeks later , only because I was taking good care of it! The pain level is very little and it heals fast!! I also have tragus, industial and my belly button done twice!! So Im know the pain scale pretty well!

ive been wanting one for about 2 months now, if by spring break my mind hasnt changed im going for it. my friends have had it done so its not the pain im worried about as much as my gums and teeth.

Don't use listerine - it contains alcohol - get alcohol free Oral B.. Alcohol - BAD.

I just got mine done on Sunday evening. While it doesn't really hurt or pinch like your typical piercing, there is a very strong burning sensation while the actual puncture is being made. The care is very easy, but it itches so bad during the healing process! Special care must be taken to avoid the oral jewelery for those first few meals after you receive your new piercing as well. Mine got stuck on my teeth numerous times... OUCH!

i have mine done and it is sooooo worth it. i have more piercings but this one is def. my favorite one ever. i reccomend it to everyone. <3

i have mine doen and i clean it and rinse with listerine ALL THE time but its still red after a week. i hope thats normal..caus e i smoke a pack a day so i hope that isnt gettign me infected.

it wasnt painful and still isnt and i didnt sweel much so that was good.

I want to get mine soo bad. But my mom won't let me. I think if i keep asking her though, she will give in. It's not that big of a deal. I'm just scared i won't be able to get hired anywhere with one. Do you think that'll be a problem?

i did mine myself with a pen i was very steraal i wash it 3 times a day with anti bacterial sope and i use listerine after each meal
