Alejandro, we always recommend professional work and advise against do-it-yourself tattoos or other body art.

this is a really dumb idea prison tatoos are not a good idea one of my best friends tried to make one himself after he got out of jail last year and wound up leaving only one big nasty looking scar instead of the "work of art" he wanted

Stmp, interesting facts from an inmate's perspective! Thanks for sharing with our readers.

The 13 is also commonly followed by "1/2". So you will see a "13 1/2" which stands for what the inmate had to face before being convicted. 12 jurors + 1 judge + 1/2 a chance. I had a celly (a person sharing a cell with you) who had that tattooed on him.

And the naked woman thing was just something that was popular at one time, especially amongst outlaws. Just like here in Louisiana, many inmates get the outline of the state's "boot" shape with prison bars going through it. And one popular tattoo around here is also a Fleur-de-lis. How many people have the same tattooes? A cross, or the words "Only God can Judge Me" or a set of praying hands?

Myscynnamyn, Interesting question. I've never heard this myth, but would be interested in the answer. Any takers?

What does a tattoo of a naked woman on the mans back mean. I've been told that it gives the male prisoner the illusion that he is having sex with a woman when its actually a man he is with.

You should really fix your information your giving out. tattooing 13 does not indicate marijuana use. Its used by southside gang members to indentify that there south siders. Its also the last two digits in an LA prefix (213), and it also reps LA territory cuz a is the first letter in the alphabet (1) and L is the 12th (12) 12+1=13. so maybe you should fix it before some pothead gets a 13 tattooed on his arm and gets shot by a gang member. Idiots.

Shiiw, We always recommend professional tats. Please do not tattoo yourself at home. Your risk infections and horrid scars if done incorrctly. Consider your safety!

id like to try this at home.

you stupid ass pendejos you don't know shiet

-- Contributed by: locomalvado13

you are right. professionals do not call their machines "guns". but seeeing as these people are in prison using a bic pen and a broken walkman it seems perfectly appropriate to call it a "gun"

-- Contributed by: rachael

what does a tattoo with the letters A.T. in between a mans thumb and pointer finger mean. There may be a gang or jail connection. He is of hispanic origin about 54 years old. thanks...Laurie

-- Contributed by: Laurie

"Tattoo gun" is not the proper term. Professionals use "tattoo machines". noone calls it a "gun".

Double lightning bolts (the SS insignia) have different meanings depending on what country you're in. In Russia, they indicate a prisoner who tells no tales. And the number 13 can mean any number of things, depending on context and country.

Matt: That symbol normally has a racist meaning.

Hi guys, Today I was assaulted by a guy who I caught stealing from my store.. He Pointed to a tattoo of a small cross on his right hand near or on the webbing between his thumb and index finger. Does anyone know what this means?

-- Contributed by: Matt

Does anyone know what MFUSSA tattooed at the base of the neck means. This young man comes from the east coast New York City area...I'm concerned that he's a gang member and he started seeing one of my daughters. He has a BIG attitude!!!

The number 13 is a symbol for a Southern california Chicano Gang Originated from The Mexican Mafia Sur Trece(13) is a branch of the mexican mafia which is why they use the number. I have heard nothing of the "marijauna use" but that's just some clarification about 13. Thanks.

-- Contributed by: Narue

tom i dont know anything about prison tattoos but that just sounds like that person hates god "... god" i believe is what there trying to get across if so im sure its nothing to worry about

-- Contributed by: waldo pepper

The number 13 is more commonly used to represent the gang the Southern Mexicans or Suranos. This is gang classifications 101. Tear Drops have a lot of different meanings, some are they killed someone, some are for every 5 years they did, some are for every 10...just know that if they have a tear drop they have done time and I suggest steering clear

13 stands for a lot of different things. No one meaning. It all depends on who the person is, and where he is. It does stand for smoking weed, it does stand for MS-13, it does stand for the Aryan Circle- among many other meanings. I spent time in a Texas prison, and was the best tattoo artist on the unit, because I am a tattoo artist. The number 88 also has different meanings, as do lightning bolts. And Alfredo's "hella lot of prison tattoos" definitely look like ..., done with ink from a ball point pen.

13 is actually representing MS-13 the honduran and el salvadorian gang. 13 beings the 13th letter in the alphabet and representing m for mexico.

-- Contributed by: gabby.

Yeah, I thought 13 stood for AC or Aryan Circle (1 being the A and 3 being C.)

-- Contributed by: Lenore

sorry, it was a 5-pointed star, similar to a nautical but solid.

My grandfather, now deceased, was in prison for a while when he was young. He had lots of tattoos from his time there but there was one that I never knew the meaning behind. It was a 4-pointed star on his hand in the area just below where the thumb and forefinger meet. Anyone know any possible meanings behind this? By the way, he was in prison for killing another man. Don't know if there might be a connection

-- Contributed by: coco

this is hella gay and thats not wat all of this stands for

-- Contributed by: ryan

i heard that in russia they mix urine, soot, and shampoo to make the ink...anyone the formula for this ink???

-- Contributed by: brandan

What's interesting is how creative/artistic some of the artists are. I had a friend who worked in a prison, and for every bad tattoo, he would see one or two really talented artists. Shame that it's being wasted.

-- Contributed by:

Wow, I've only heard of prison tattoos representing that a certain individual has done time (usually their prison ID) or they belong to a certain gang (Crips, Bloods, etc.). I never knew about the lightning bolts (which just seem like any other "macho" symbol) or 88.

-- Contributed by:

Very interesting. I just watched a show on the National Geographic Channel about prison tattoos in Russia. They have apparently evolved it almost into a secret code, marking their crimes, the time they've done, and what their "status" is among the prison population- details I won't go into here because they get pretty unsavory.

They tend to make their "ink" by scraping the soles of their shoes, melting it and combining it with urine for the carrier. Yuck!
