) i've had my tongue pierced for about 6 years now and ive had no problems with it. Of course for the first week it get swollen and achey but that should be obvious. it is a foriegn object and your body/tongue has to get used to it. i do recommend getting one if that is what you want, but only if you will take care of it. the first week mostly do what your piercer tells you to do and you should be fine, also once or twice a month i change and clean my barbel. it dosent hurt to be safe. :0 hope my advice has helped

Heyy. I'm 14 and I want my tounge pierced. I read all the risks. And I'm not worried about infections just more about swelling. And stuff. I'm trying to convince my mom...ithink its working. I just told her that agreeing on this could bring us closer. Amd that sometimes you just have to take the risks. And I'm showing her that I could take care of a ring. Rushing my teeth often. Brushing my tongue. Using mouth wash. Gargaling. Salt water before bedd. And in the morning. Showing her that I am lowering the risks....wish me luck. I hope I convinced her.=.).

Monkey, At only 13 yrs. old the best advice I can give is to follow your mother's wishes. A tongue piercing can cause a speech impediment over time (unattractive slurring!) , so please keep this in mind. And yes, chipped teeth is another potential problem. I had one when I was in my early twenties for close to a year. It was never comfortable and always caused problems with my teeth and it rubbed against my inner gumline, irritating it and causing pain. Although it may seem like the cool thing to do, if you wait until you are 18 years old, you won't need parental consent, and you may even change your mind! Why not opt for somethingless permanent while you are discovering your identity? How about a henna tattoo or a fun haircolor? You can express yourself in many ways! Good luck!

Its great to see such an honest article but as a body piercer i hope you don't mind if i offer some advice to improve your work:

Firstly: You seem to think the mouth is full of horrible dirty bacteria but if this were true we'd probably be dead. As a gateway to the inside of the body the mouth is actually one of the cleanest places in the body and the bacteria in the mouth helps to keep in that way - helping to break down anything coming into the body. The risk to the piercing is that the healing of the piercing may disrupt the balance of the bacteria in the mouth as it brings in its own bacteria or breeds its own from trapped food particles. Tongue piercings are one of the fastest ones to heal (4-6 weeks) because the mouth is the fastest healing area of the body and has the most 'good' bacteria.

The piercing in the tongue is not near any major nerves as it stops halfway down and tongue piercings are pierced at the front - the tongue is a muscle and the main concern is the veins in the tongue of which there are three. In 9/10 people the middle vein in the tongue stops just after the nerve but in 1/10 people it continues to the tip. In this case it is considered impossible to give a conventional tongue piercing (if there is room one may be attempted to the side but this is rare and only for big tongues!) as this is the vein that leads to the brain, piercing it will cause bleeding that can last upwards of 4 hours and as well as the risks of blood loss the sheer amount of blood also carries a risk of choking and suffocation.

It is VERY hard to swallow the whole piercing bar as they are very long, it is much more likely you will swallow one of the small balls which pose less of a threat. Ideally you should just check the balls is tight enough every few days.

It is not necessary to gargle or brush your teeth that often, in fact you will probably just irritate the piercing and make things very sore and difficult to heal. Rinsing with salt water after eating, drinking sugary /alcoholic drinks and smoking will be enough. You only really need to avoid alcohol, oral contact and smoking for 2 weeks as this is the trickiest time healing wise as the swelling is the biggest risk and will be set off by those things.

A white / yellow coating on the tongue is actually just an unbalance of the bacteria in the mouth and is caused by not rinsing like above or by smoking and is an infection.

The biggest common danger is the swelling which can be kept down with hot salt water rinses, Ibuprofen, Ice cubes (especially ones made out of frozen chamomile tea as they are very soothing) and cold foods. Many people find it hard to eat in the first 3 days so soups, ice cream and milkshakes /fibreshakes are recommended!

Finally tooth chipping and gum problems are much less when wearing bioflex bars or just plastic balls :D

Hope this adds another edge to this article!

I went wit 3 of my friends and we all have no regrets. We're doing what we were told to do but we are all healing at different rates. All of my swelling has left. We also know about the risks of tooth decay. . . But my suggestion is go for it you only have one life so live it

Yeah i am getting my tongue pierced in two or three weeks and my sister got it about a half a year ago and hers only took four days to stop swelling and about 7 before she changed to the shorter barbell, my advice from her point of view once you change the barbell to the shorter one once you get it have the balls on the end be plastic or the whole thing plastic so you can get used to having the balls there then you can wear the metal or shaped ones. LOL me and my sister always get the same piercings her first because she is older then me after. i was going to get the tongue when she did but i had to be atleast 16 and i wasnt but i am now so yay, lol have fun to anyone who wants to pierce it. Oh and btw if you keep reading all these like risks of getting your tongue pierced, you will probably scare yourself out of getting it. Because i went to the piercer to get some jewelry with my sister and the piercer said your tongue is actually rather safe because you have natural enzymes in your mouth to help kill bacteria that comes into your mouth with food so its actually more safer then other piercings. And it heals very fast a average of a month. Just follow your piercers instructions of aftercare. LOL i took up a lot of space, sorry.

i have had my tongue pierced for a few weeks and i have only bit down on it once and that was because i was chewing carelessly. i think that as long as you take care of it you will be fine, a solution to chipping of teeth would be to get a plastic barbel.when you get it pierced make sure that you use mouthwash afdter every time you eat, i did and it healed really fast

I just got my tongue pierced yesterday. I had been thinking of doing it for years, but never did. As soon I got it done, I wanted to remove it. I waited an extra day, in case i decided to change my mind again. So my question is, am I able to safely remove the tongue ring after 1 day without worrying about infecting the hole, any more than if i left the ring in?

Me again!

I almost forgot: If you are interested in more than one tounge pierce then remember to put longer jewelery into the other pierce (ings) in your tounge, if you don't then you may have problems with over swelling.

Remember: If there is a problem then go to your doctor as soon as possible.

While you have raised some rather exilent points, i would like to point out that the "numbess" ect are extremely rare and the few cases where those sypmtoms have been recorded were self pierces or pierces done in "back ally" studios. The tounge its self is actualy 2 mussles conected by a pice of conective tissue witch has little or no nerves in it. You may run into problems if the tounge web gets cliped during the pierce and that WOULD cause restricted movement.

Swelling can be more severe if a person is smoking (smoking can also cause infections due to the bacteria in the tabbacco smoke)

The tounge frequently apears slightly yellow during healing, usualy around the pierce and doesn't usualy extend further than that, the yellow is actualy brusing.

Salt-water soakes are the best thing for a tounge pierce, keep them in the fridge and you will find the after care rather plesent! Remember to get your tounge bar DOWNSIZED from the 18mm starter bar! This will help your teeth! I am now wearing a 12mm bar bell witch doesn't knock on my teeth.

Actually, white spots around the fistula (hole) in the tongue does not denote infection. It just means that you have been over cleaning your piercing with too harsh a mouthwash. Especially if your tongue is white-ish on top or yellowish or a mixture of both. The only thing you truly need to watch for are the following...

- swelling that is so bad that you are having problems breathing, eating (after the first 4 days). You should eat soft foods, soups, etc the first few days due to the obvious swelling that will occur. - blood coming out of the fistula (piercing hole) after the initial bleeding (if any), that probably means that you have accidentally torn the fistula while eating or god forbid, been playing with it... - any color of -goo- coming out of it other than a yellowish color. Yellow is lymphatic fluid and other plamsma which is normal for your tongue to excrete when pierced and healing properly. This can occur for a few weeks...

No matter what your "piercer" told you to use, NEVER use Listerine or ANY alcohol-based mouthwash. Always use Biotene or Tech2000 or equivalent. Those are specifically formulated for mouths with special needs such as healing wounds or certain diseases... Those are perfect for you. Also rinse with 1/4 teaspoon sea salt to 8 ounces warm water several times a day. It work like a charm!! Trust me!! It rids your mouth of harmful bacteria, as well as helps ease the pain and swelling!!

I've had my tongue pierced 4 times. Each time my swelling was completely gone in 4 days or less. And the first time I didn't follow any of the directions I've outlined, and that time I had a horrible experience. Each time after that I did exactly as I've stated and my swelling was never all that bad to begin with, and I was actually eating normal foods the first day and each day after that... No problems ever.

Just don't play with your tongue piercing until it's healed... OR swap spit or well.. you know... Keep that till after it's healed... at least a month peeps... Seriously... It's really important.

Good luck!!!
