As a professional tattooist and shop owner I agree 100%. You need to be safe and make sure the person you are getting your tattoo from knows what they are doing. You could get infections and if they do not know how to operate there machine correctly your tattoo could fade. Even some professionals dont know there machines. Me and my husband got a tattoo out in town from a well known shop and there was brush strokes and fading in solid black areas. It looked horriable after scabbing whent away. You should consault and see work of as many tattooist and pick the best. I am proud of every tattoo that comes out of my shop. All my artist have to know there materials and have a open mind as well. Our shop has been open for years and I have yet to hear a complaint. Just make sure that you walk into a shop that is experienced and has no bad history, and remember that this is something that is potentally going to be on your body for the rest of your life so make sure it has meaning behind it.

firstly you have to be an artist!-tattooing without this and your work will always be bad, then learn all you can about tattoo tecnique machine tuning, health and safety,hygene- the have a go- on yourself to start with, keep everything clean, use disposable tips/grips and needles-never reuse anything, professional tattooists can and do do bad work in pretty unclean workstations-be a professsional, set high standards and work will come to you-have a go.ps so called professional tattooists will not like this-they hate to think there closily guarded secrets are out-that its not as hard as they like to make out so they can justify the extorsionate prices they charge for very often poor quality work, have a go -prove them wrong.

I want to learn to do tattoos. I do not really know how to get started, to go to a school and pay a huge tuition or to a shop to do an apprentiship. I have never done a tattoo before but have 3. I am really interested in learning all about the gun, needles, shading, and different types of art. What should I do to get started?

I am going thru school to get my state cert. in tattooing and want to decern between rotary or standard coil machienes. I am not too concerned about the cost but want a super strong shader / liner that can run massive mags eventually for tribal coloring. Would you share your advice on the makers and their pros and cons from your experience. Thanks
