Kaitlynn, the piercing is quick and pretty painless, however- you may have a speech impediment while wearing the jewelry, and it can be tricky to get used to. It's only something you can decide. Good luck making a decision!

Hey yall. i really want to get my tongue pierced. my sister got her's done, but won't tell if it hurt or not. but from anything she has shared. that actual piercing is better if you relax your tongue as much as possible and relax your whole body. some people even find it better to close their eyes during it. she definitely had more problems after it though. she had trouble chewing and talking a lot. but she said that little things like carefully moving your tongue in a wavy pattern hours after help you get used to the piercing. that's also what any piercer has said about it. a lot of them say a lot of it is just the factor of getting used to it and that some people even have slight problems talking afterward!

Third, I would say the after is more painful with the swelling. The process itself is quick and carefree. You won't feel a thing. Good luck and enjoy you're new piercing!

i'm gonna have a tounge piercing next friday and can i ask you guys who have already done it,,DOES IT HURT?? because im a little bit afraid of the pain,,which is more painful the during or the after???

-- Contributed by: third

Liah, I think that your body is stressed from the piercer needing to do it twice! Ouch! Take the time to rest and help your body heal. If the pain persists, consider removing it. Body art shouldn't be pain inflicting, it should be enjoyed! Best of luck!

I got my tongue pierced on Friday and that ... hurted like hell. I moved the first time so the man had to do it again so that ... was not cool at all.My tongue swelling goes down but then would come back up and start hurting the ... out of me. I hope it stops hurting after a week because i can not take this pain no more. Did i mention i already have my belly pierced and that didn't hurt at all plus i got it twice but if i take my tongue piercing out and it close i am never getting it again

Lysha, These are all good questions that are best suited for your piercer, who is both familiar with their procedure and who can see the consistency of your skin and the resiliency. If you have doubts, don't risk it!

Hmm, I'm 17 and i am going to get my cheeks peirced in a few days. BUT, I'v seen a few people with them and heard about them. And have a few questions. 1, IF i ever decide to take them out, Will the effect of dimples in my cheeks still remain? 2, Iv seen cheek peircings... Lop sides ad ... that ..., It looks rediculous...What do i do if she/he does that to me? 3, I have my septum peirced and i had snake bites.. But recently took my snake bites out...again IF i take my cheek peircings out, will i have tiny little peircing hole scars? 4, A mate of mine has hers done and the dimples caused by the peircings are like.. from her peircing to her chin...Will that happen with me? She may have already had dimples though...

PLEASE, get back to me. or email me Doctor__.x@hotmail.com

Wow! Great article, really nice pointers here and i loved the format it was really easy to read. I hope you don't mind if i offer some suggestions?

A tongue piercing should be performed from bottom to top because then the piercer can see where the needle is going in relation to the veins on the underside of the tongue. Surgical steel is not the optimum metal for piercing titanium is. Steel is an alloy that contains nickel - which can irritate the piercing and a lot of people are allergic to it. The ball is fastened on the top also as it is much less fiddly and means the ball on the underside has been tightened outside the mouth and the piercer knows it wont come off.

Liquid antiseptic is overkill, it will destroy all the good bacteria helping your piercing to heal and will damage the delicate healing tissue. You are much better off using a sea salt soak. Its best to avoid any kind of antiseptic or antibacterial agents during healing unless you contract an infection.

Leishia: Listerine is far too strong for the piercing and is likely to burn the delicate fistula, it will also strip the piercing of the bacteria it needs to heal with. If you want to use mouth wash use something like dental PH and dilute it. It is generally much better just to use a sea salt soak to rinse your mouth with though as it is natural and much more gentle than mouthwash.

Vanessa: The whiteness around the ball is normal as it is your bodies bacteria balancing itself out (or lympth discharge) but you do need to clean it away careful with a clean (ideally you should have brought a new toothbrush when you got pierced) toothbrush. You can loosen it off first with a hot sea salt soak (1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to 1 mug of boiling water left to cool till bearable and held/swilled around the mouth for 4 mins or so) as this will put less strain on the area.

Alison: To me it sounds like the bar you were pierced with is a little too short and the ball is digging in - is your tongue very swollen? If so you need to take some Ibuprofen and suck on some ice cubes. A hot sea salt soak like i suggested above is a good idea too and if you have some chamomile tea make that into ice cubes instead as its very soothing. Keep an eye on it and if this doesn't help or if its not swollen go back to your piercer and get them to put a longer bar in for you!

John: Bad breath is an indication you aren't cleaning it properly. Your piercing should be healed by now so it is ok to use mouthwash - or just rinse your mouth with sea salt every night. A build up of caught food and bacteria will cause bad breath in a tongue piercing.

Andrea: I know you probably don't want to hear this but 14 is probably too young to get a tongue piercing done and i'm not talking about age of consent and having to have your parents with you but your body. Your body still has some growing to do at 14 and if you get pierced now and then have a growth spurt you risk stretching the piercing hole - which will move the piercing making it wonky, leaving you with a very large hole or simply just causing your body to reject it and leave you with scarring. This is even more risky with an tongue piercing as you could cause some real damage your tongue. I know i sound like a nagging fishwife but it really would be better to wait until your at least 16 :).

There seems to be a lot of people asking for advice - if you do have a problem or would like to know the best way to taking care of your piercing then please feel free to visit my piercing aftercare website ( titaniumsenthralled.co.nr ) and have a read or contact me and i'll do my best to help you out!

Hope my comments help out this article! Ku xx

An anticeptic mouthrinse will be great for fighting germs and keeping the risk of infection down. Make sure to follow all other cleansing procedures and continue to check the healing process.

Is it find to use Listerine for a mouth wash, the tattoo place recommened it, what do you think?

-- Contributed by: Leishia

Tongues may have a frothy ring around them after the piercing during the healing. Keep cleaning it, and if it worsens or if pain develops, consult your physician.

I just got my tounge pierced like a week ago.. but iv noticed an increase in white around the area of my tounge since the piercing.. im one of those people who usually have a white tounge in general even though i scrape.. but it seems to have gotten a little worst where the ball is.. i dont know if thats normal after a piercing..

the initial piercing isnt as painful as it is... interesting. Personally, i hadnt eaten that day and not much the day before, so i almost passed out since my bloodsugar was so low and it really is an adrenalin rush having a piece of metal stuck in a well-used muscle of yours.

the piercer will make you rinse out your mouth, then dry off your tongue to find a good non-venous spot, mark it, clamp it and pierce it
but the aftermath is were it gets you. try to not eat or smoke until about an hour after its done.
for the first week or 2 dont eat spicy, hot foods or milk or bread (could cause yeast infections)
keep anteseptic mouthwash and ibuprofen with you, constantly wash out your mouth with a mouthwash/water mix after everything you eat, smoke or drink
the first morning will probably be the most swollen your tongue will be, you can try to reduce this by eating a bunch of ibuprofen that night
no beer, liquor's ok
ice water/slushies/smoothies (no dairy)are good for reducing swelling and are easy to eat
some solid foods are confusing to eat... its new to have something permenately in your mouth, you're initial instinct will be to try and chew it and eat it like all the other food in your mouth, so until you're used to it, try to stick to soft foods or soups
no sucking ANYTHING (face, organs, straws, etc.) for the first week, it could break a blood vessel which causes unwanted confusion
other than that, just keep it clean and have pain relievers for the discomfort and enjoy

Any advice would be great.

I got my tongue pierced yesterday, and it was awesome. I felt so much adrenaline just signing the papers, i got the same feeling as right before i go on stage, i was nervous and shaky, but well prepared. It hurt only as the needle first went in, then there was nothing...i wiped the drool from my chin and had a smile on my face. The feeling was as great as the applause of the crowd. :)

I'm 18 and my parents don't know...they'll find out eventually and hate it, but not everything in life turns out the way you like, including your children. I'm only young once, they had their time.

I can't wait till my lisp is gone!

I'm 17 and for year my mum said that if I got my tongue pierced, she'd hate me. I don't care, didn't care, and got it done not two days ago. She doesn't know yet, but she will and she'll have no say. It's my body, and your body is your own. Do what you like with it. Just make sure you do know the proper procedures for looking after it and such, you'll be right as ray. :)

hey all i want mii tongue pierced how bad does it hurt

-- Contributed by: teagan

The information about the procedure is ridiculous. A tongue piercing doesn't hurt hardly at all. I didn't even flinch, and I'm such a WUSS when it comes to pain. Look up tongue piercings on YouTube and look at people's faces while they're getting it done. - Seriously. I almost passed out because I was so nervous about how bad it would hurt while I waited to get mine done, and it was all for nothing. You feel a tiny ... but mostly just pressure, and then its done. There was a tiny bit of blood for the 5 seconds before I swished some water around in my mouth directly following the procedure, and it never bled again. I was TOLD by an EXTREMELY experienced piercer that tongue piercings hardly ever bleed. This webis giving out info that just doesn't seem right. Either someone likes painting a negative picture about this type of piercing on purpose, or they just don't know what they're talking about.
